"Open wi-fi" annoys me completely. I want the service to be readily available and relying on someone deploying the service will see us waiting for long years here in New Zealand - just see what happened to Reach Wireless. And expecting to find a free "open wi-fi" is too much of uncertainty.

I liked the idea of having free Wi-Fi in cafes, as they do in the USA. This is not common (I haven't found any) here in New Zealand, probably because of the high cost associated with landline broadband options.

Although CafeNet works fine, it's at best only available in Wellington CBD and some major towns. Everywhere else in this country we have to rely on cellular data and I don't think we'll see much change in the landscape for the next couple of years.

Unless Sam Morgan uses some of the Trademe money for a big project undertaking...

I actually tried to persuade my employers at DoC of the need to set up a network of wireless hotspots in remote parts of the country (co-located with the existing radio network), but for some completely inexplicable reason they couldn't see the need...
On the other hand, a case could be made that it wouldn't take that much greater WiFi penetration to get us to the point where if I find myself somewhere where I don't have WiFi access, it's probably a hint that I should be doing something else anyway.

The only free WiFi Hotspot that I know of is Hoyts Riccarton in Christchurch...

Just a quick question... You guys spoke of 2 bands of W-CDMA.... How do I know which one my mobile supports?

Say a Sharp 903. Which band is it? Cause I always thought that when you mean W-CDMA, it just means one band.

And hey, telecom going W-CDMA? It's great, haha, great for those of us who use phones from overseas, and hopefully, they'll get rid of their "you can't just buy a sim card without buying a phone from us" policy. And it better do it quick before 2008 comes along.

There are two WCDMA bands, one used here and in Europe, and one in the North American market (yes, you can't take a Vodafone 3G phone over there and roam on 3G, so this is not an advantage Vodafone users can use as a trump card). And possibly a third one, on 850MHz coming out sometime.

And hey, telecom going W-CDMA? It's great, haha, great for those of us who use phones from overseas, and hopefully, they'll get rid of their "you can't just buy a sim card without buying a phone from us" policy. And it better do it quick before 2008 comes along.

Nothing confirmed, just rumours. And there's no such policy on Telecom, because their network does not use SIM cards...

Telecom have already signaled their intentions of deploying CDMA EV-DO Rev A, which is the step after their current technology. This should be faster then HSDPA on WCDMA on its first stage.

Telecom can not deploy HSDPA unless they have a WCDMA network, which they don't and anything said so far are rumours.

There are 9 ratified UMTS bands however the most common are at 2100Mhz (what we use in NZ and Europe) and at 850Mhz which is used in the USA and shortly in Australia by Telstra.

Telecom's biggest strength would be the fact that once their AMPS/DAMPS network is gone they could potentially roll out UMTS in their 800Mhz spectrum as well as run a CDMA network side by side since they have management rights for both AMPS bands. This would give them a huge advantage over Vodafone in both overall coverage and inbuilding coverage. The handsets are already in the pipeline unlike UMTS @ 900Mhz which is still a couple of years away.

I think USA/Canada uses 1700MHz, while everyone else uses 2100MHz. 850MHz will be deployed in Australia, but it's not in use anywhere else yet.
