I also had the emergency call only problem on my offical stock Telecom Milestone every time i restarted , my solution once turned back on was to turn "flight mode" on wait a few seconds then off and it then connected fine :)

Whaaaaaat. Why would it have an option for CDMA?

If you go into menu, is there an application called 'Y!X TWORLD' or YourTelecom?

Telecom's IMEI checker is not 100% reliable; I've even had it report a Telecom-provided device as incompatible!

If you do a network scan, what do you see?

If I scan the networks right now it gets Telecom NZ, 2degrees, vodafone NZ. But it when I go slightly further out when the reception is no good for Telecom only.

Have emailed telecom and they said if I have only been given the choices I mentioned for preferred network then it needs to b set to WCDMA only. So have been trying that

If it doesn't have the Telecom apps in the menu, then it is likely either:

A non telecom sourced device (makes sense by your experience) or
not on the factory rom

If it's the first, then it's just not going to work properly ever, due to a hardware difference.

If it's the second then it may just need to be reloaded with the factory software, but I don't know much about that.

Is there anything saying cyanogen in the settings menu?
Cyanogen is the most popular 3rd party rom for it.

When i loaded it on, i forgot to backup the radio settings, and it went to the UK files. Then found it would only work on one tower in hawkes bay which was 2100mhz. So i had to try the radio files from various countries and ended up using brunai or thailand or some weird country to get it working.
In wellington it would have worked fine because they have 2100mhz all over the place but up here, its almost all 850mhz.

They're options on all Android handsets, some newer handsets have options for LTE and/or WiMAX too! Most phones won't have the options listed, but that doesn't mean the software support isn't there. I'll flick you an email tomorrow :)
