WVS = Wholesale VDSL2 Service

Indicatively...

Looking at standard DSL (ie: with Land line) the wholesale access price of WVS0 is just over 2x higher than the price of the EUBA0 service from Telecom wholesale that is now commonly used to provide ADSL by ISP's (except where the ISP has LLU gear).

The wholesale tail extension of WVS0 (aka backhaul from your regional aggregation point to where your ISP does handover) is also >2x the price of EUBA0 tail extension

Handover costs probably the same, not significantly different.

ISP costs, probably higher than EUBA0 since they would need to provision more bandwidth to maintain a reasonable contention ratio on domestic and international transit for VDSL2 customers.

Also the difference between VDSL2 naked and "with land line" is larger than the difference between ADSL2+ EUBA0 naked and "with land line". Got to protect that land line revenue I guess... /sigh

Not surprising more ISP's aren't offering it yet, needs to come down some imo.

PS: Looking at WorldNet VDSL2 retail pricing I'd have no faith in them providing expected levels of performance on those margins. Would be interesting to see what Snap and Unleash are charging end users.

You could just as easily say, 20 years ago, that 90% of customers don't need anything faster than 9.6 kbps. Data needs changed over time, and will change again in the future.

indeed, and in less than 10 years time most people will be on fibre and so won't need VDSL2

Offsite backup is one area where it is IMO insane to have any asymmetry to the connection.

Friend got a second dsl connection at their workplace for the CCTV stuff just because if he was home and watching it everyone knew because it would take seconds to load even the trademe homepage.

All I want to do, is get more upload bandwidth so I can upload my HD camcorder videos to share with family and friends. I'm 50 metres from a ADSL2+ cabinet and get very close to 1 Mb/s upload but in terms of HD files, this is absolute torture!

I don't want to have to move to another provider just for VDSL services, and prefer to stay with Telecom but if this is what's needed, I may have to explore those options.

In terms of cost it seems like Worldnet is the one to go with but hesitant to make the switch to them..

I'll wait longer...

VDSL2 (WVS) from Telecom Wholesale is still in Soft-launch. There is no confirmed public date for full-launch. So ISP's that use Telecom Wholesale will not be able to offer this service yet. Additionally the VDSL2 cards are still being rolled out by Chorus via FTTN.

Providers selling their own UCLL service may offer VDSL from your local exchange (eg: TCL, Voda, Orcon etc).

Hey guys,
Sorry for the late reply!

OK the service providers I know are:
- Snap
- Worldnet
- Unleash (whom we use)
- Xtreme (who are very price competitive for NZ data)

- Telstra have VDSL2 on their own network too but ridiculously expensive.

We pay $350 a month for 500GB national, 50GB international and a /28 subnet. Xtreme has entry level plans including unlimited national at $149 a month.

Apparently Telecom Wholesale does not support IPv6 over this service yet but its apparently* coming. Considering how sh!t house and expensive they modem they suggest to go with it is I don't think it really matters. Seriously that modem is $330+GST and its firmware is massively buggie, has a horrible UI and I only really use it as a media converter!

Telecom wholesale VDSL2+ is PPPoE iirc so you can just bridge it to something that doesn't suck right?

Hi Ragnor, most commercial VDSL2 connections I have are doing just that, the cellpipe is I am sure very capable, but most commercial users prefer there own routing destiny.

Unleash do have 6to4 and Teredo tunnelling on their network - you may use this to get IPv6.
Works over plain ole ADSL2+ too.

Works over plain ole ADSL2+ too.

Teredo is arse and 6to4 only works if your 6to4 endpoint is a public IP. (So your router has to support it specifically.)
