Shock: I feel I need to split my response to this into 2 parts.

Mature hat on:
At the end of the day the decision will be a financial one but the end user experience is diminished because it removes a 'value add' service. In this case you are removing the customers ability to customise your service to reflect some of thier personality. One would hope that this is picked up in other areas or a newer more economical version of this service.

Releasing the inner manchild:
This is like the death of Goose in Top Gun to me. You are taking away my Kenny Loggins - Danger Zone you bloody buggers ! I always got great responses from friends & colleagues about being greeted with that tune :( And then you rub this fact in with TWO text messages reminding me again of the death of Goose !! **** !!

Ok I am done.

I agree with everyting that you say. I think, yet again, that Telecom are making a big mistake. I just don't understand why the voice of reason, sensible thinking and common sense seems to be absent from telecom decisions these days. But after the Big bill board proposal thing (that went wrong) the silly "pacman running around Auckland and  the "abstanance" thing which got world wide coveridge, I guess all common sense has gone out the window. Might be time to get rid of my telecom shares me think.... but wait for some unknown reason, their value is a lot less these days.  Can't understand why.

Wait so you are a share holder ?

Trying to think like a shareholder, wouldn't you want them to be shedding services are not profitable or don't make financial sense to renew so you get a better return ??

+1 Shock... If it was a true subscription service that you paid X per month for it, then it would be a different story.  But since it's a single time payment then the issue about profitibilty wouldn't have come up I suspect.   But try selling that once the service has been put in place.

One other thing to factor in is also the fact that the product doesn't work when called from every network, particularly if called from a VoIP connection due to findamental differences in the way ringing is handled. This means it's lifespan is probably limited anyway as the telco world migrates solely to VoIP.

In the VoIP world ringing is generated locally by the CPE or VoIP handset in response to a SIP 180/183 message, this is the exact opposite of the traditional TDM world where the ringing tone (or Caller Tunes) you hear as the ringing is generated remotely, and the call connection handed by SS7 signalling on the side. While it's possible for VoIP to use a SIP 183 to retrieve RTP audio from the callee it's not a very common scenario.

Meh.

I never used the service. I knew it existed but thought it was odd. I hate call centers that play music so why should I make my friends endure it?

I still remember buying a second hand phone from TradeMe and it having a caller tune attached. I was so mad.

Glad its going. Always felt it was unprofessional when ringing someone for something work related and it was some lame pop song or joke type caller tune.

I called someone from work today and got a terrible rap song, phone was then answered by an elderly male... think one of his grandsons was playing a joke somewhere along the line!

Won't miss them.

I think there's a bit more to the service going than what you think. Reading this thread it seems you're in the minority (of keeping the service) anyway.

I think when the great unwashed out there find it's gone they we will see some feed back. I for one am sorry to see it go. 2Talk used to have caller tunes as well but it died out of the blue about 12 months ago..

There will be feedback, sure, but as Amber says, the service will not be reinstated.

Won't miss it. Fun for personal phones, but can you take someone with a business phone seriously when they have some crap song? I think not...

Just saw this thread...  My two cents:

I put a Caller Tune on my phone on the old CDMA network. When I moved to XT (well, a couple of months after I moved to XT, when I realised my Caller Tune hadn't come with me) I put a different one on the new phone.

But to be honest, I'm not that fussed about it going. It's not like I ever heard the song myself. My wife's mobile number is one digit different to mine, and we had friends who occasionally realsied they had called the wrong person when they heard the song, but that's what programming numbers into your phone is for, right?

If Telecom aren't making money out of it then drop it. It's a business, after all, and I'd rather not see my phone/broadband bill increase to subsidise something like this...
