Further to this question, and back to what i started this forum to dicuss

Can anybody confirm if an 800mhz CDMA 2000 network can be run in conjunction with a n 850mhz wcdma?

Isn't this what Telstra doing, well atleast until they close CDMA 2000

The closure of CDMA has been put on hold. But yes that is what Telstra were doing so it must be possible...

Telecom have management rights for both AMPS bands of radio spectrum (20MHz).

The CDMA network uses the A-band, and when the 025 network is closed, the B-Band will be availble for other uses - I guess UMTS 850MHz is a possibility. However I imagine TNZ are watching the handset market closely to see what happens there first.

If handset availability was their prime concern they would never have built CDMA2000/1X...

I don't know is that comment is necessarily 100% accurate. You could have quite reasonably expected that most networks around the world who were running AMPS/DAMPS networks would have upgraded to CDMA2000 since it was the logical upgrade path so there should have been a lot more people using CDMA that what there is now.

I don't think anybody predicted large numbers of carriers dumping their existing infrastructure completely and rolling out GSM to replace it.

When it comes to the strategic direction of their mobile network... I suspect the TNZ board have a magic 8-ball they consult.

Obviously you think CDMA is not a good choice. You might want to give reasons for that. CDMA/EVDO is the way to go. It is in many respects a better technology than WCDMA.

Sorry Brad, you've mis-interpreted my comments. I also believe CDMA has huge technical advantages, and as the opposition has finally moved to (W-)CDMA they are only now catching up.

Perhaps TNZ will surprise us all and follow Sprint's lead to a WiMax network in the near future?

Telecom have not had a lot of options in the past. They lost their TACS spectrum they could have used for GSM and until the late 90's only owned both AMPS bands. Rolling out a 900MHz GSM network was never a realistic option for them as the spectrum was not available and when the hard decision had to be made in regards to the future on their AMPS/DAMPS network they had the choice of going with CDMA or potentially rolling out a nationwide GSM 1800 network (or maybe even GSM 1900 since they owned 1900MHz spectrum which they purchased because CDMA phones were dual band 800/1900).

The GSM option would have probably taken them until late 2002 at the earliest to roll out a network with reasonable coverage. In that time you could argue that Telecom would have probably had no customers left with their AMPS/DAMPS network which was already hemorrhaging.

CDMA was the best option for Telecom and putting facts on the table it's hard to disagree with that choice.
