See if you can obtain the original purchase receipt from the seller.

it's about as much as you can do.

I'm selling an iPhone 4 at the moment and I am getting asked for the receipt all the time.

Strange, I sold mine not long ago and nobody asked for the IMEI, Serial # or receipts.
