My machines DNS is set to my routers IP address (10.1.1.1). Router has a DNS of 202.27.158.40 which is Telecoms. So it's the router doing the work in that reguard.

International traffic on Big Lag is simply horrendous during peak time, even compared to Go Large. I can't get up to 30kbps on an US http download.

Yup, that DL's in around 1 minute (4 minute video) on my Big Time connection from the cache server v17.lscache7.l.google.com [210.55.180.158] which BTW has a ping of 8ms :)

You said you were pulling it from v4.lscache1.googlevideo.com on my machine resolves to 210.55.180.153 I can download from that cache server at full speed as well.

Looks like something is wrong with the caching, you should be pulling it from the cache at near line speed, as someone else mentioned you may be outside the network zone telecom allows for full speed caching

Try logging a fault, unless NeilR is someone else from Telecom is around?!?!?

UPDATE: There are a few threads on google about slow cache servers, DNS can be a factor as google route traffic according to what DNS server the request came from, some of the DNS servers from Xtra may not be in the list etc.

Also, to do further testing directly to the cache servers you can use this URL and just edit what cache server you want to test the speed for - it will download a flv file directly after a few seconds of pause

Not sure where you heard that, but the slowest I've had is 60kB/s, fastest is 1.4mB/s.

i have just changed to this plan, this plan is not reallt that good. you cant really do anything at peak time including normal web surfing

FYI - changing to opendns servers seems to have helped me out with a few things.

E.g. - for soem weird reason I couldn't get to any links on digg since switching to bigtime, changing to opendns solved this.

My experience - youtube blows, ftp seems fine. Rapidshare a lot slower but still with in acceptable limits.

Apparently if you use OpenDNS instead of Telecom's DNS servers you will not be getting Youtube traffic from the cache, so I wouldn't recommend it.

Seems to suck arse both ways. 90% of the videos i watch probably aren't cached anyways, been a while since I've watched lonelygirl15 or dancing rollerskate babies.

Using OpenDNS is a bad idea, as shown by the experiences with TelstraClear (myself included).

When you use OpenDNS your PC will try to access content using a server that will be closer to the OpenDNS servers' location than your own. This adds lag to the content finding.

It also means that it interferes with CDN (Content Distribution Networks). For example if you use a CDN and try to access Facebook your PC will try to access the servers that live somewhere near the OpenDNS servers. But then the Facebook servers will identify your PC's IP address and try to return the content through other servers.

In turn this causes problems at your ISP's firewall and proxy/cache side because responses to requests are coming from unexpected connections. And things stop working.

This is, very quickly, what we found out after discussing with TelstraClear's head of network in another thread.

I am sure this would also happen with any other ISP that uses cache mechanism.

In other words: don't try to outsmart the network, because it may just break things for you at the end...

I'll take slow youtube (time waster anyways) over sites not loading at all any day. (Opendns vs telecom dns)

It would be really helpful if cases where an ISPs DNS system failed could be reported to the appropriate ISPs. I guarantee you that if there's actually an error / mistake in the DNS setup, then a clearly articulated report would get to the right person.

Simply switching to overseas (or other) DNS will increasingly have unintended impacts such as not being routed to appropriate CDNs or caches - not to mention it's not helpful to other users on the network.

Is the Telecom DNS still broken? Do you have any specific examples you can remember? Are you aware that Telecom recently upgraded their DNS?
