c.diddy: Any VFX users on Big Time? I am currently with TelstraClear on PDQ and am contemplating switching over to Big Time, but am interested to know if VFX is still usable?

My mate uses VFX for his business on Big Time and I've heard no complaints, I have a VFX line here I use occasionally and it's fine.

You can turn interleaving off on BT so you get good pings.

Hi,

Am currently with Orcon and I have nothing bad to say about their internet performance, it is lightning fast for me, a bit too fast as I rocket through the data very quickly :).
I'm on their network also and their phone system sucks, lots of calls where no one can hear me and have to call back, and caller-id is completely hit and miss.

So am thinking about joining telecom and am curious about this plan. I am mainly interested in amount of data rather than speed of data so fast data at peak times isn't too much of a concern though would like skype to be able to work properly.

A couple of questions for people currently using it..
Does skype work ok during peak times?
What kind of speeds are people getting from these sites during peak and nonpeak times
Rapidshare.com, megaupload/megavideo/ hotfile.com

I assume static ip's aren't available on this plan?

Also just looking at telecoms other plans, 2 cents per MB seems pretty excessive doesn't it?

download speeds from hotfile about 10 mins ago (1.38PM) was about 430KB/s

static IP u need to be on a higher plan to get one "included" or on adventure to buy one for 20$ per month

BigTime problems I had have all been resolved.  YouTube is sorted amongst a couple of very minor things.  I have been moved to a new whisper cabinet connection (local loop shortening / migration) in the last day so I can tell you download speeds have increased dramatically and pings have dropped and my connection is notably more stable (gaming) after doing some monitoring.  I'll continue to keep an eye on download speeds and performance during peak times.

BTW, Thanks Chorus! I heart you!

Monday this week. (13th) On old connection approx 4-5km from exchange.

Friday this week.  (17th) Following connection to a Whisper Cabinet (100m down the road)

Just called telecom to transfer over my line and order broadband from LLU with Orcon.

What a _circus_

Went through to the moving team, who then took details and transferred me to a specialist team because I was on LLU.  They explained everything etc etc then they said they had to record the conversation but wait, they couldnt get it to work, so they asked if they could call me back on my home line.  They call back, still doesnt work, can they call me on my cell.. They call back, doesnt work.. can i call 123 again.. so i do, have to go through the intermediate person again who insists on taking my details all over again and checking account numbers etc etc and then puts me through to the specialist team.. We then repeat the process, their equipment wont record can they call me back, groan... i tell them we have already done this but they think it might work.. it doesnt...

I then say said actually i might just stick with orcon, this doesn't really give me much confidence about telecom.. they apologise lots and say they will call back when its working..

wasted 30 minutes with them.

What the **** What an awesome specialist team...

In other news I'm on Go Large and have recently had my router dropping connection and reconnecting at 177kbps or so (yes, that is BITS) Probably unrelated, or so Telecom would tell me.

Big Time would be OK for me as long as it performs just as well as Go Large with the nice improvement of the uncapped upload rate

But is Go Large going to stay or are we all going to be forced to change to Big Time? I just read all 22 pages of this and couldn't come to a conclusion.

Check the modulation on your router - I find if it syncs at adsl2-re I get stupid speeds all over the place - forcing adsl2+ makes it all work well

Currently it's on "ADSL2+ (Multi-Mode)" which it's been on since I got it (DSL-502T Gen II)

I've had some disconnections before but usually it would reconnect at least at 1500kbps

Never this low before

I switched to Telecoms new Big Time plan on the 7th which is the day it was released, it was quite slow the first few days, I thought to myself i will give it some time to get the speed etc sorted, for the last couple weeks it has been extremely fast, international downloads are like 500kbps, local downloads the same, everything is super fast, im very happy, even torrents are fast about 180kbps max, i have downloaded and uploaded over 105gb since the 8th and its still super fast, believe it or not its faster at peak times by about 2mbits than it was on the capped plan 20gb, i have run various speed tests over the last couple weeks and have found the slowest it gets is 1.5mbits at say 4:30-7pm otherwise its like 4.8mbits, not bad for Wanganui.

Thumbs up telecom. But we will see soon as more of NZ uses this plan as to whether or not the speed changes....

Update on my experiences with Big Time
-------------------------------------------------

Well I have recently moved house from central Wellington to the 'burbs and have kept my Big Time plan.

It seems that in my old place I was an exception to the rule and after downloading at 800Kb/s+ all day everyday I have now been properly shaped during peak hours. My sync speed to the exchange is still 11Mb/s and on an adsl2+ connection, but now Http and B/T downloads have slowed dramatically. I now get around 20kb/s combined (torrents mainly). I have noticed files that are probably cached do come down fairly fast.

The big plus is that normal browsing is only slighty slower than when I was on the Adventure plan. I personally am happy to schedule any downloading for off-peak times as long as web surfing/streaming video is un-affected. Add to this that Telecom got my broadband and phone line connected on the date they said and it worked without any problems, i'm pretty damn happy with their service!

Well moved over from my 105 gig plan on orcon LLU to telecoms go big today. My sync speed has gone down from 11,000 to around 8,000. What do you think is the cause of that? Telecoms equipment not as good as Orcons? Should I complain?

I'm not adsl2+ as yet and my sync speed is around the 8000-9000 kbs.
I spoke with the telecom guys today who are doing the cabinets around here and going by what they said it pretty much comes down to distance from the exchange. (Unless you just have a bad port)

Within 2km roughly you can expect to be around the 8000 kbs until the adsl2+ cabinetisation is done.
I know someone who lives right beside their exchange (literally) and he's getting 11,000 kbs sync speed. (semi rural area)
Don't know why orcon gave you such a good connection, but could you be on one of the unbundled loops that 3rd parties have installed their own equiptment in?
