doug3: This may appeal to some people but you cannot set & forget credit cards otherwise the banks will screw you.
This system will most likely benefit Skinny more than the customer.

If Skinny really wants to make it easy for the customer they would sell data the same way petrol is sold, and just about everything else on the planet.
That is one buys 60 GB then uses it till it's gone, maybe with an expiration time of 3, 6, or 12 months so Skinny stays in business.
Even if this option was at a higher price (60 GB for $90?) it could still be popular.

As for Skinny Mobile the only data you can buy is 250 MB for 7 days or the standard rate of 50 cents a MB (558 times more per MB than Skinny Broadband !!!) unless you buy a combo where you have to pay for talk and text which you are not going to use.

It would be great if Skinny could add Skinny Broadband to Mobile even if it was at much higher rate say 10 GB for $50 with 3 months to use it.
This could work similar to 2degrees Mobile Zone Data. When you in a 4G Skinny Broadband location that is what you use, when you are not, it uses your other data.

Skinny is no different to other providers with this...

Oops yes they are they are cheaper!

Presumably the renewed plan runs from when you renew it rather than from when the previous data ended, so if you renewed a few days early, you would effectively end up with 27 days to use the data. Actually even better would be a notification - you have 5GB left and more than 2 days to the next auto renewal - click here to enable automatic renewal to occur as soon as the 5FG is consumed.

Sorry to hear you had trouble renewing your plan. We do have a few ways to let you know that you've run out of data...

If you are browsing when you run out you will be automatically redirected to an "out of data" webpage where you can click a button to renew your plan or purchase the 10GB Data Add-On. You will also be sent an email (which we're hoping you'll receive if you are also using data on your phone).

The account is then updated and you can resume doing what you were doing straight away. There shouldn't be any delay in being able to use your new allocation of data so it's strange that you had to turn your modem on and off again. Please let us know if you have any more issues.

Our Skinny App is dedicated to Skinny Mobile usage only at this stage, but try the Huawei HiLink App to manage your modem and monitor your usage - you can find the app in the app stores.

Just to let you know Spark has added quite a few more 4G cell towers around the country in the past few months, which means we have extended our coverage of Skinny Broadband! There are thousands more addresses now eligible. So if your address was previously ineligible for our broadband then go ahead and throw your address back in the address checker at skinny.co.nz/broadband.

I didn't get sent to the out of data webpage and neither did I get an email, and neither did the service resume immediately on top up - just no internet connection available.

So I suspect that there was some other issue that was rectified by turning the modem on and off. I was at less than 1GB data, so I had just assumed that the cause of the issue was low data, I would have had to top up later that day anyway.

cant say for sure but i know they are locked to 4g but if i search for networks on mine it shows vodafone and spark 4g and i can also make a new profile with new apn setting etc

so i think it is probably unlocked

i might try a vodafone or 2degress sim in it soon but right now i dont want to remove the skinny sticker as i only just got my replacement modem and haven't fully tested it yet but if this modem turns out to be good i am happy to void the warranty and try another sim

you could also try to find some more generic firmware and flash the unit of course we dont know what frequencies the hardware has got but should be ok for 4g on both networks i think anyway

It is not locked. You can put any non-locked SIM card into. The modem only does 4G , so no 3G fallback.

So my plan just came to its month end (with more than 10gb remaining), expecting the 'set and forget' I left it 20 mins, rebooted the router and then even tried logging into my 'dashboard' on the skinny network.

Broadband topup link here (http://www.skinny.co.nz/help/out-of-credit-or-data) give a 'whoops something went wrong' message (a customised 404?)

So now on a Sunday evening of a long weekend, mid-streaming-movie I'm SOOL??

Anyone have ideas how to resolve this one?

Not sure I haven't had to renew just yet but from what I've seen and heard there management via the dashboard really needs work and hopefully they make an app for it or add it to their current app

And I haven't tested this but am I correct in saying that when you run out of data you can't even get to the dashboard to manage your account and renew the plan because if so that is just stupid

Hi, So long as you have a credit or debit card registered against your broadband account your plan will automatically renew.

Skinny Broadband is unlike Skinny Mobile accounts in that you do not top up your account so long as there is a card registered, the account will auto-renew. You can set & forget about it.

A card is registered against your account when you purchased your Skinny Modem - hence the set and forget. If you have unregistered your card you can re-register it on our online dashboard and then purchase the plan. You can also stop your plan or check your usage on our dashboard. Just visit skinny.co.nz and click on "Login" in the top righthand corner. You can also manage your modem and check your usage via the Huawei HiLink App (which is available from the app stores). This app has the same functions as logging into your modem online via http://192.168.1.254 so it makes tracking easy for you.

If you run out of data before your month is up and you are browsing you will be directed to the "out of data" page. On this page click on the broadband link and it will take you to the dashboard to renew your plan using your registered credit or debit card.

There was a bug that you alerted us too on the out of credit page - so thanks!! We've fixed that link to the dashboard now.

If you are not browsing when you run out of data you will still be able to visit the Skinny page and login to your dashboard as it is classed as zero-rated traffic (i.e you won't be charged for data). If you have trouble still, you could also login to your dashboard using mobile data on your phone. Or just give us a ring on 0800 4754669 (08004SKINNY) Can you please send me your Skinny Broadband number (it is on the bottom on your modem) and I can look into why your account didn't auto-renew for you.
