Is there somewhere you can find out what the latest version of the firmware is ?

v6.00.15 build05

It's pushed out automatically the moment the modem connects through into our Management Platform :)

Shout out to your fulfilment team. After reading this entire 25-page thread yesterday I re-signed for another year to get the free modem and was told it would take 5 days to arrive but it arrived this morning. Very impressive given the current situation!

Looking forward to setting this up. Could you confirm in a nutshell the process for hooking it up as an ethernet-connected AP to an existing router?

Cheers!

Steve

5 days shipping is the standard advice, but yeah it's quite often same day or 1 day if your in a main city.

If you wanna use it as an AP, just disable dhcp, change the IP address and plugin to a LAN port.

I'd plug it into your normal connection  for 5 mins first and let it update though :)

I've disabled DHCP, given it an IP address and connected it to LAN port 1, but the status light is red, and the modem's UI is indicating there's no internet connection, even though if I join it via Wifi I can reach the internet no problem. Is this normal behaviour once it's in AP mode? Also, how long does it take to download the latest firmware? It's on v6.00.12 build07 after ~ 20 minutes.

[EDIT] Ohhhh the penny has dropped. It won't get updated while it's being used as an AP because you update via TR069, correct? Darn. Guess I'll need to routinely connect it to the ONT to keep it updated.

Strange issue happened again where devices are connected to wifi but no internet available.

Had to turn router off and on and now its working again.

Currently have band steering off so have devices primarily connected to 2.4Ghz.

Do you think its best to go back to default and have band steering on?

Yup, bandsteering is best. there are a few edgecases where it doesnt work great. but nor does any other platform in my testing (eg my place, building is the size for 1 AP to cover nicely, However my office is downstairs with metal beams running through the floor. It's literally like stepping from almost next to the AP to inside a faraday cage instantly..

In my case, a well placed mesh unit solved that completely though.

As to your 'no internet' issue; I've had a few reports of that issue, but never had defined details to pull out Last night was the first time i was able to capture it in the wild.

Our vendor is looking into it.

Yup, it doesn't do STUN behind NAT for TR069.

Yeah, just really hard to catch the exact cause, no point in saying to the vendor in some rare cases, customers are reporting issues with dropouts of internet.

Could be any of a ton of physical things ahead of actually what is happening.

That's not to say anyone here has reported anything incorrect, it's all been helpful. we just haven't seen any direct errors that scream i might be the problem till now :)

If it was that obvious it would have been sorted - its a weird problem that hopefully someone can figure out

This may seem like a dumb question, but would there be any issue with mounting the smart modem upside down on a wall close to the ceiling?

I want to replace an old wall mounted airport extreme, and aesthetically it will look much better from the ground if I mount the unit upside down which I can do by placing hooks under the footplate. I just wanted to check that it didn't produce a wifi pattern that sent it all up into the roof space.

thanks

Peter

@mule and @OVER please DM me your serial numbers and mac address for one of the devices struggling to connect. I'd be keen to have a poke at the logs and see what's happening, DHCP is set quite large by default so you shouldn't be hitting issues there.

Sent you a couple of DMs about this, thought it was sorted, but having same issues this morning

Hi all, sorry to crash a dated conversation on DHCP but I do believe the Smart Modem has some intermittent issues renewing addresses. I have had my modem since Nov and on three seperate occasions it tends to lose the plot and not renew some leases on Win/OSX/IOS . @hio77 back in late Jan / early feb I sent you some logs. If you give the devices a static or connect to guest network they work fine. Reboot and often things go back to normal. Not a problem that happens every day, but annoying.

Considering going back to Asus for wifi as more reliable over the long term. Reading the thread there are a couple of other people experiencing similar issues. Plenty of leases available so that’s not the problem.

Quick solution is to give problem device a static ip, connect and then go back to dhcp. Somehow this seems to force the modem to release a lease (my guess) .

Not looking for any miracle solutions just thought you should know I believe it’s a persistent issue that shouldn’t be overlooked.

Cheers

I don't have the antenna pattern maps handy, but It's Ommi, so should be fine.

It's an interesting setup.. I'd be keen to see a photo ;)

Certainly not overlooked, it indicated a few things that we were having trouble replicating.

I've also been able to narrow down a likely cause for that, Vendor is looking :)

There has been a few issue reporting that have the same outcome, but different causes which certainly make it hard.

Cool, let me know if you need a hand testing or have any suggested work arounds to try. Because the problem doesn’t seem to show up until a month or so of uptime hard to test.

Do you know whether a dhcp reservation stops the problem? Otherwise I could just give static’s to devices or schedule a regular modem reboot.

It seems to have worked quite well - I am getting good coverage - and looks much better upside down! See attached photo.
