jeffnz: I can't believe people get so upset about this practise which is not designed to belittle or demean, in fact its the opposite.

This thread is highly entertaining if nothing else

I'll just stick with getting my phones at the warehouse then. Always handed over, never had a dead one...

.... mind you it might be because none of them were particularly coveted or complicated ;)

My 18 year old son loved getting to unbox his new phone when he switched from CDMA :)

<- don't ask me where I am - I haven't a clue: its a tech thing ;)
Housewife computerer: not particularly great at either.
And don't take me too seriously.

Maybe they do it because they are muppets lol

More than likely it is their idea of customer service by putting the sim in and giving it to you ready to use based on the assumption you don't want the box

I am one for keeping the box + twistie ties + plastic bags + manuals for anything expensive I buy so it would annoy me too. Must remember to ask for it in the box in the future.

From reading the first post i thought the box was thrown away, no? If the customer get's to keep the box then all good, doesn't bother me if the shop unboxes it. Unless the pull off the plastic screen cover which i like to leave on as long as i can lol

Absolutely not! Its literally just is putting the phone together, putting on the case and screen protector (if purchased) and doing some simple checks to make sure the phone is all in order and as it should be. It's also provides a great opportunity to show customers things like "Your Telecom" or add it if it's not there, how to connect to wifi, download apps etc. Definitely sounds like great customer service to me, any old shop can just sell you a phone and bag it up.

Yes, there are customers who would prefer to do that themselves and are more than capable. I find you'll get a vibe for these types of people during your conversation with them.

they probably get alot of people taking the phones back and asking how to put the SIM card in.
I would just ask for another one, they could always give that one on to the next customer.

snnet: ...although I've never been foolish enough to buy an apple product...

I know I shouldn't feed the trolls. I know I shouldn't.

Did you happen to read the summary of Apple's sales from first quarter 2012?
385,000 iPhones and 130,000 iPads sold PER DAY. PER DAY of the Quarter.
That's a hell of a lot of foolish people!

Cheers,
Joseph

And to get back on topic.

Surely the store should just ask. Personally, I would prefer to do it myself. If it's my mum buying a new phone, please do everything for her you possibly can.

Cheers,
Joseph

Heh, this is actually pretty funny. My brother bought an HTC Incredible S and it is actually a very cool phone.

They are great devices though and are reasonably priced. You don' find too many people saying they regret buying one. It is far better than putting that money into finance companies...

Surely if you buy a phone on a contract, then the store needs to make sure that the phone is OK and working for the contract? And when you sign up to that contract who legally owns the phone?

Its a little different to prepaid I suppose.

I peronally would not be bothered if they set my phone up for me.

Pretty simple solution to what amounts to a very minor problem.

If they unbox it in front of you, then tell them to stop when you see them cut the seal. No harm done.

If they unbox it out of sight, well then you can demand a new phone since you cannot tell that the one you are being given is brand new.

What you shouldn?t do IMO is sit there watching them unbox it and put it together for 10 minutes, and then once it is all done, go on the internet and complain.

Should they ask if you want it unboxed? Maybe. But I bet if they did that there would be a whole bunch of people who say ?nah, I?ll do it myself? and then stuff it up and complain about crummy products because they didn?t realise you need a sim, or have no idea how to setup email. Probably better to assume ignorance, and let people who like opening boxes opt out.
