There's several visible glitches there that appear evenly spaced in time - are they at the same intervals as you were seeing before, but just ramping back up very quickly?

I was also quite suspicious about the visible glitches, but they were only apparent in the single threaded downloads of that file, and were quite inconsistant across the several downloads, the timing intervals between the dips varied between them so I suspect its unrelated.

Linux mirrors aren't a bad option for these sorts of tests, eg:

All three of those gave the stepped pattern, the 1st two maxing out the line for the usual 20s then dropping to 40Kb/s to 200Kb/s subject to threads, and the third one much slower but same pattern.

Looks odd, do you still have a ticket open with telecom?

No, they closed the ticket dispite my protests it was not right. The guy who phoned to tell me I suspect was only helpdesk who agreed but it was closed by the network guys.

It may or may not be helpful, but I have coincidently had an almost identical problem.

I'm not with Telecom, but another ISP that uses Chorus wholesaled services over DSL. My connection would run at full line speed for 40 seconds, then drop to near zero (and start dropping packets) for 10 seconds before ramping back up again. This repeated continuously every 50 seconds, giving the same square wave pattern you were seeing, just with a different timing.

Similar setup / line stats etc. to you. Chorus tried several things to fix it - turned out to be a defective port in the cabinet. Moved port, problem resolved immediately.

Currently Talkiet (Neil, Telecom) has someone looking into it, so rather than waste Peters time by having multiple people at Telecom looking at same problem Im waiting to see what this other person finds.

The problem with my current speed issue is that it doesnt drop out when downloading from the Telecom core network, which should rule out local cabinet faults. Without knowing anything about Telecoms network and how they route traffic I guess its possible its still a port fault on an edge switch further up the chain but then I'd expect it to affect a lot more people.

The ports themselves are managed by Chorus. It's all an equivalent service these days so the connection will go:

Home -Chorus Copper> Chorus Cabinet or Chorus DSLAM in Exchange -Chorus national backhaul to BNG> Telecom Handover provided by Chorus -TelecomStartsHere> Broadband Network Gateway (Telecom owned) -> Telecom Retail National Backhaul -> Telecom POP Routers -> Interwebs

The Telecom Speed Test box is directly plugged into the Telecom POP Router. The TelecomStartsHere is where Chorus's job finishes and Telecoms job starts. So using our Speed test box "should" rule out a port issue... but not always :)

If you don't get any joy from Neil, I can escalate your case through to the Broadband Complex Support folks who I know well and get them to look into it. Feel free to email me as I haven't heard from you. But Neil should also be able to get to the bottom of it.

With multi-thread, I was still seeing the drop to near zero at exactly the same time, but it would ramp back to full speed quicker.

Mine was affecting traffic from core network services from my ISP as well, so it looks like it is a different issue to yours - sorry for the diversion!

Hi all,

Just an update, I've been working with someone in Telecom CTS who have made a variety of changes (line profile, euba-buba etc) without fixing the issue. Next step I believe is as above and will be moved to a different port. Will update again when that happens.

Great... I escalated your case to one of the CTS managers I know well and he said he would put this case onto one of his engineers..

I'm sure the CTS guys will get to the bottom of the issue.

Chorus guy came out today. Plugged in his tester into my line, saw a good 22Mbit sync rate, declared all to be perfect and it must be an ISP fault and went to leave and close the fault. After pointing out to him that the whole point of his visit was to change the port Im on and as per his ticket info (he showed me his pda with ticket info) that it stated I always had a stable sync speed, he eventually went off to do so, but left 100% convinced it can not be a faulty port if sync was stable...

I just did some testing on some downloads from Rev3 (so international traffic) and....

Appears to be fixed.

Thats about a gigs worth of data in that capture to give it some perspective.

Its only been a couple of hours but I shall remain cautiously optimistic that it will stay fixed.
