Ok, I just registered to say I get this exact same problem and I had my VDSL installed by Chorus maybe 2-3 weeks ago.

Many sites will timeout on the first load for around 15 seconds (refreshing won't help, it has to timeout for around 15 seconds). Then all subsequent loads will load fine for a while (Either until I stop browsing the website for a while or for a couple minutes, I'm unsure).

ICMP is de-prioritised by that hop in Telecom's network.. that result doesn't actually mean anything because connecting to a website typically uses http or https over tcp/ip.

Might be better to look at the network graph in Chrome's dev tools when loading the site.

Yep... That high ping time is meaningless.

I think the recommendation of using Chrome Dev tools or Firebug in Firefox showing how the site loads is far more useful information.

OK thanks - the pings were responding far quicker once I had a web connection so I thought it was related.

I have tried to capture network traffic (Chrome) when a browser connection fails, but it either loads, or no response is received. Not very helpful I'm afraid.

I am still having the same problem. I logged a call with Telecom, and they monitored the line for 12 hours. No errors. I have done a factory reset on my Technicolor router, and since changed the LAN address and DHCP range. Little or no improvement.

I still have to frequently try 2 or 3 times to connect to some websites. This evening youtube, vimeo and stuff (ah, common theme is streaming video) all gave me problems.

What could be causing this? Faulty router? Could it be my switch (Allied Telesis AT-GS900)? Such a strange problem.

I'm on VDSL and it's working fine. You don't happen to have a Facebook block in place? Steam fails to connect when Facebook is blocked.

Is the word "forum" in a URL causing the problem? It just happens that I have a similar problem. I used to be able to access www dot DNforum dot com when I was using Slingslot's ADSL, but have not been able to do so since early Oct after I switched to Telecom's VDSL.

I may have the same " transparent cache issue" and have just sent an email to you, plambrechtsen.

I wrote this message on Nov 18 but still have not heard anything from Peter.

Interesting. I will pay particular attention to this, but coincidentally or not, forums to seem to be the main culprits from memory. Even geekzone fails sometimes.

I have the identical issue. Easy resolution is VPN, but it's far from ideal.

I did some digging in my wall and found non CAT5 wiring up to the splitter. VDSL requires CAT5 due to it's massive intolerance for the smallest amount of noise. Chorus know this and are required to install CAT6 if the wiring is not atleast CAT5 (I have a friend that works for Chorus). Problem is, installing CAT6 can be a lot of work and most customers wouldn't know the difference (cables look much the same and you have to count the pairs to know for sure it's not CAT5), so in my case the technician just pretended the house already had CAT5...and it's working for him because now Chorus just keep telling Telecom that the house already has CAT5 (even though I must have told at least 5 different Telecom representatives on 5 different occasions over the last 4 months that it doesn't). Why does this appear to be only an issue for Telecom VDSL? I can't answer that, but it may or may not have something to do with that last sentence, particularly the part in brackets. I know what I would do if I was a certain type of person, paid a set amount to do a job that could either take a long time or a short time and if the customer (ISP) was not going to argue with me if I gave them some completely fabricated excuse.

Unfortunately, although customers generally don't know the difference between CAT5 and CATsh*t, VDSL does. Hence (what I believe is) the problem.

It would be interesting to see if those that are having these issues live in reasonably old houses. Or if anyone feels like unscrewing some screws they can check for themselves:

A cable is CAT5 if...
Cable says CAT5 (or CAT5e or CAT6) on it and/or
Cable has 4 or more pairs (this was the dead give-away for my cable)

Good luck getting Telecom to do anything about it though, it's been 4 months and I'm still waiting...

For now, I just use a proxy server to get around it. I'm trying www.yellowproxy.net but it requires me to enter the website address every time. Since there is only ONE website where I have a problem, is there any proxy server that I can use to set it to point to my desired website every time it starts?

I cannot connect to http://www.microsoftvirtualacademy.com/ yet I can connect from work. Usually, if I try 2-3 times, I can get a page to load, but I have not been able to use this site from home. Very frustrating.

I can connect using a proxy. I tried the yellowproxy.net but could not connect to their site, so tried hidemyass and voila - I can connect to http://www.microsoftvirtualacademy.com/ - what is going on?

I seem to be having more trouble than usual this morning.

This is common problem if you are infected of a virus or malware. Have you tried using another machine ? Best to try your friends machine as I suspect you home machines are all infected.
