You have your answer: limited to 2 Mbps. In New Zealand 4G reaches over 100 Mbps. Can't compare services.

There are 2 different kind of plans: limited and unlimited (but with speed limit.)

Limited plans with 40GB/20/10 data allowance comes with full speed 3G(21Mbps) and 4G (100+Mbps).

ugh, again with this nonsense. Any idea how many people in Russia? Ever heard of Economies of scale? Most expensive country in the world? Been to smaller places like Fiji ?

Trust me, Russian economic is corrupted and unstable at all, sad but true...

It's irrelevant, if you have a pool of 143M subscribers vs NZ's Paltry 4M it makes it possible to provide cheaper services.

Or, you could move to Russia so telco's aren't "ripping you off".

Just out of curiosity, I thought I'd take a look at the entry level smartphone plans on Verizon & AT&T, since the US is often touted as a bastion of cheap, fast, & unlimited data*.

Both have a $40US base charge for unlimited talk & text. VZW charges $50US for 1GB, AT&T charges $45US. So $85-$90US for unlimited calling, texting, & 1GB of data, on a 24 month term, with a device activation fee, & the 'freedom' to choose from only the devices those operators choose to range.
For comparison's sake, the equivalent entry-level unlimited talk & text plan from Vodafone NZ is $69.00NZ on no term, covers calling & texting to Australia as well as NZ, & includes 1.5GB of data.

* Yes, you can get unlimited data on Sprint & T-Mobile, but that's a case of 'live in the relatively few right places or you're screwed for reception'.

Factoring in our population & topography, NZ's mobile market really is not too shabby in the global scheme of things.

How do they get on overseas with unlimited mobile data such as in the US? Or is it just horribly slow?

I have an "unlimited" data plan with Softbank in JP.
Buried in the fine print is says if I go over 1.5gb on my unlimited data plan in a month they will reduce my speed to 128k. :-O

still unlimited technically - and in some places on their network I'm lucky to get 128k even without being reduced. :-D

To be fair to ATT & VZW, those are their new 'share' plans which do include tethering AFAIK. You can also share the data pool from those core plans directly to 3G/4G tablets for +$10US per month per tablet. Although I can't imagine 1GB going terribly far across both devices - and it's $95/$100US per month for the one phone, the one tablet, and the 1GB.

This is the other side of unlimited (Or 'unlimited' - common in the UK as well) data. Softbank notoriously oversaturated their network by selling iPhones on low-cost plans with unlimited data as standard. Sold well, but not a great experience. While I do believe data caps in NZ will increase over time, this needs to be carefully managed against network & capacity upgrades to ensure the experience remains consistently excellent - I'd take a solid couple of gigs at cat4 LTE speeds over unlimited 2G speeds.

Technically you can use as much data as you want in NZ, you just have to pay for it. As Mauricio, John, & Steve keep saying with good reason, wireless is a finite resource & serves a different purpose to fixed line.
