quickymart: I just changed to that yesterday. Both the rep and sales rep I spoke to told me that calls to Australian mobiles were free on that plan as well...but that plan description sort of says otherwise. I hope it's covered!

It depends on which "$69 plan" you changed to... If you're on Red Essentials open term then you're all good (see http://www.vodafone.co.nz/mobile-plans/sim-only/) but if its the 24 month one (with 500 mins) then you might want to go back to the rep who changed you over.

Getting back on topic... As far as I can tell:

VF charges the 20c/call on the basic On Account plans, but not on their Red packages. This is true for business and personal customers.
Telecom charges for voicemail on all personal Ultra Mobile plans, but not on business plans.
2degrees charges for voicemail on all personal Carryover/Share Everything plans and the $39 Business Carryover plan, but not for business plans $49 and over.

Of course this only looks at plans that are currently on offer, and I haven't looked into Prepay (I think it's safe to assume that they're charged to access voicemail since on each provider, at least some current plans are charged).

sbiddle: Voicemail retrieval has been charged at 20c per call since the early days of BellSouth (it was their launch rate). On Telecom you historically paid a per minute rate to retrieve messages, and also a per minute rate for message deposit. From the mid to late 90s Telecom moved from 20c per minute to 20c per call and dumped the deposit fees due to the competition from BellSouth.

Right now Telecom, Vodafone and 2degrees all charge 20c for no reason other than that's the price of the service - in much the same way 20c is still the "standard" price for a SMS.

I don't pay it on Vodafone because I just call my number using included minutes to check my voicemail. I don't know if the same trick works on Telecom.

Try calling 083210 from a non-Telecom number, and see if you get greeted by the "please enter a mailbox number" message, in which case enter your full phone number, then your PIN when you're asked.

Oh C0ck, I just rang my own number to see if I could retrieve my messages that way using free minutes (vodafone) and I ended up leaving a message on my own phone which then cost me 20c to retrieve... FAIL!!

I'm not a complete idiot, I still have some parts missing.

If you need a longer voicemail message call 702 for free and set new VM PIN and record greeting message. Checking VM the way described (calling yourself), you need to press # during greeting message playback to then be asked to enter VM PIN which will login to your mailbox to playback messages.

Did you just miss the # key?

old3eyes: Most company voicemails I setup we kill them in 30 days.. I think Skinny has a very short retention time as well. There's nothing to stop Telecom and Vodafone from setting the new message "grim reaper" from deleting them at 60 days or less. Unless your have your fone turned off even after 7 days it's usually too late to act upon the message..

Plus in Telecom's case the same voicemail is used on homelines but you are not charged for access to clear messages..

Yes but in 2Degrees' case, they delete your mailbox, not the messages
