Stan: How much of an improvement is 700mhz over 850mhz in terms of coverage?
Will we see a noticeable drop in dead spots?

i think it depends on if the tower density is the same, if it is then yes you would is my guess

I would have thought that by using LTE at 700 they could get the same coverage as 3G 850.
LTE 700 Coverage would not be stronger than 3G at 850 as this would result in data but no voice services.

This will vary based on transmit power and antenna gains at different frequencies, but in general 700mhz i imagine would have a similar or slightly larger footprint. Im sure someone with more sound knowledge can comment.

Well, Im sure we'll move to Voice Over LTE in the next few years which will solve that problem

Hopefully but Telecom still don't even have HD voice on their mobile network so it may take awhile...

If they have any sense they will bypass HD voice and go directly to VoLTE.

VoLTE is dead before it's even been born. It has no future.

Because IMS is dead. The future of voice will be a combination of legacy fallback, OTT and WebRTC based solutions.

VoLTE has about as much chance of succeeding as RCS - the Vodafone platform in NZ that all 3 carriers were going to deploy never even got launched publically. IMS in many ways was never even born, it was simply a proposed technology to replace 50 year old circuit switched networks and it's been bypassed by better things.

Then you need to tel T-Mobile US as they are currently rolling out VoLTE and from user feed back it's good..

A handful of networks deploying VoLTE means very little - plenty of networks deployed RCS as well and users said how well it worked. A handful of networks deploying a technology doesn't mean it's the best solution or that others will adopt it.

Yes VoLTE works, infact it works very well. It's however very expensive to deploy and requires an IMS network that for all intent purposes is obsolete technology. WebRTC can do everything VoLTE can do, and do a lot more, and do it all a lot better.

I'd also assume that once all the data is shunted through 4G that there would be oodles of space left for voice traffic on the 3G fall back. I'm assuming that the move to VoLTE in the US for Verizon has more to do with the eventual retirement of their CDMA 2000 network (which I assume will get costly as vendors supplying hardware become few and far between) and T-Mobile trying to harmonise their mixture of different technologies (Metro-PCS IIRC used CDMA 2000 and T-Mobile was using GSM) with AT&T jumping on the bandwagon because, "why the hell not".

Do you actually understand WebRTC? I don't like using the word disruptive but that's exactly what WebRTC is. IMHO it's the most disruptive technology we've seen in the voice world and will fundamentally change the way people communicate.

The fact networks are deploying VoLTE really is a moot point. It's a standard that has never had total support from the industry or vendors. It also requires networks to deploy an IMS network which as I've said is an obsolete technology these days.

Why deploy a dead end technology that is far from straight forward from a network integration point of view when there are perfectly good 3G networks for legacy fallback and OTT solutions revolving around SIP and WebRTC that will deliver the functionality? Why invest in a dead end voice solution when voice itself is in decline?

Does anyone know yet re; the list of the  selected 11 Waikato sites for the inaugural LTE 700 roll out . I read about Hamilton CBD and Morrinsville areas. Cambridge surely has got to be on the list [I hope for now]

Interestingly Vodafone has stated ("What are your network plans in the coming months?" question) that it's trialling VoLTE and looking at IMS.
