What does the horrid cabinet have to do with a regular time of day drop in synch speed? Horrid as it may be it apparently works until evenings.

As noise gets worse your noise margin will drop. Once the connection no longer stands up reliably it will re sync the connection to reestablish it with a 12 db margin again.

Noise is picked up by unterminated stubs and low quality filters messing up the balance of the line. Fix that and you should get less noise so the 12 db margin is enough to last thru the evening without doing a re sync.

FEC is Forward Error Correction

Would normally mean you have a dodgy line, I assume you have asked for a 24 hour line test to be run and got the results?

This. Everything you have posted so far is pointing to a physical line fault - this means an intermittent or faulty connection, corrosion or something similar. Statistically this is more commonly inside the premises than outside on Chorus' lines, so ruling out the internal wiring first is the usual practise.

I'd suggest as a first step, contact Fraser (coffeebaron) and get him to sort the internal wiring, probably with a master splitter instal - chances are this will fully resolve the issue. If not, then you will no doubt see an improvement in speed anyway (so money well spent), and the problem can be referred back to your ISP to follow up with Chorus.

Also, changing ISPs is not going to address this issue (other than a more or less helpful helpdesk!).]

Had Chorus out twice today... They were supposed to ring before they turned up, but I got a call as the guy was leaving.

Managed to get him to come back while I was there and bribe him to install a master splitter. Speed is now up to 10mbps and the line is looking much healthier.
