  • It seems I also cannot port my phone number across sooner than the 30 days without affecting my Fibre connection as they are tied together. Maybe the answer here changes depending on who I speak to at Spark?

I could only understand that being a requirement if you were moving to an ISP that provides a phone service.

I bought a SPA 122 when we moved out landlines to VOIP a few years ago.  I'd recommend it, as it makes your VOIP completely independent of the router setup.  If we have any problems, which has only happened once when changing to VDSL, then I just call WXC.

But we will probably ditch the landlines completely soon.  Apart from telemarketers, no one calls my business landline now.  There are just 2 people who call our home phone regularly, one being my mother, and I'm in the process of setting her up with a Skinny mobile so that we can call each other for free.

LG Also has Gigabit

Linux: Gigabit is not related to VoIP in anyway
Linux

Slightly OT....

But are you sure, according to one of the users in one of our offices, he requires a gigabit VoIP desk phone instead of his 100mb one because we upgraded their switch to a gigabit model :-p (Yes, that was an actual request that came in)

Seems like a reasonable request if you ask me. Perhaps they wanted quicker response times to calls...

Funny as that sounds, I'd actually like a Gigabit enabled desk phone.

Most desks in our office have the PC connected through their phones (so from wall jack, to phone, from Phone to PC/Laptop). The phones (Avaya) are 100Mbit only, and the switch is Gbit. I have a couple of connections at my desk that are Gbit (don't go via phone) but it is a PITA if I am transferring data over the network (say, upgrading someones computer and grabbing all their documents and their Archive PST) when they are on 100Mbit.

Upgrade to a NEC system and you can have Gigabit phones on your desk..

The funny thing I find about this thread is to provide VoIP services is *VASTLY* more complex than providing Broadband. And as such I could never see Bigpipe ever providing VoIP. It just doesn't make sense for the pain.

VoIP you need an SIP Stack (Broadsoft or an enterprise Asterisk), provisioning on the stack all the way down to the ONT (if they use that) or ability for the customer to program their own device, intergration to IPMS for number portability, a whole core arctected with QoS to prioritorise the Voice traffic over Broadband. And many many more components across the network. Or leverage the Spark stack, but that isn't going to happen as then Bigpipe is no longer completely separate from Spark.

vs

Broadband you "just" need a enterprise grade router able to route best efforts traffic. No QoS, no billing (as it's just a big pipe unlimited).

This thread is a nonsense as it will never happen on Bigpipe. If you want VoIP get it from 2Talk, WXC or Skype.

For me the thread turned into how to get VOIP with Bigpipe. I'm scheduled to switch to Bigpipe and 2talk in 6 days time (finally nearing the end of a 30 day notice/termination from Spark).

Setting up VOIP with 2talk on the Huawei HG659 has been very straight forward. The whole process might appear to be a little daunting at first, but actually quite painless when you take action. I've received great tips and advice on this forum and wouldn't hesitate to return the favour if there's anything I can share.

So a month ago Bigpipe confirmed that they booked our internet to be switched over to them today and that Chorus confirmed it would go through at 6am today. However we have been without Internet since this morning.

Spark UFB was working fine until this morning on the scheduled switch over, so when I woke up I simply removed the VLAN 10 tagging from the HG659 modem thinking that was all I had to do. No luck...

Restarted the ONT, restarted the HG659 modem, all lights on both appear to be normal. Within the HG659 modem it actually says the Ethernet is connected and we've been assigned what appears to be a public IPv4 address of 100.68.*.*. We can't ping 8.8.8.8 however, or reach the Internet of course.

Finally got around to email Bigpipe support at 8:21am this morning after trying everything I could think of... no reply as of yet and I can't find a way to communicate with Bigpipe any quicker. There's no confirmation of them receiving my email. I wish they at least had a web helpdesk system to show that my ticket has been updated with my message, or an online chat system...

Sorry for the inconvenience, please restart your router.

I cant recall if their system sends you a 'ticket number' when you lodge a support call.

Its certainly comforting to receive confirmation of details you submit and perhaps an incident number. There is never a 100% guarantee that email ever gets where you sent it....

Would it be worth trying to upgrade the firmware to BigPipe's own? I understand the Spark version should be compatible (other than VLAN tagging), but perhaps worth a go? Link to firmware at the bottom of this page, and username/password also on this page (under how to change wifi settings): http://pages.bigpipe.co.nz/bigpipe-modem-setup/

A friend of mine went through the same switch-over this morning as well (though from Voda); he flashed the BigPipe firmware onto his Voda-supplied HG659 and everything went ok (other than getting 35 down rather than closer to 100; hopefully he'll sort this soon.).

Thanks guys, agree! My HG659 router was purchased from Bigpipe so it's not a Spark or Vodafone version :)

Will report back soon hopefully with good news as I've just got an email from Bigpipe confirming my connection is now live (thanks DarkShadow!).
