What's with roaming packs (or lack of) to the Cook Islands? Going there in a couple of weeks.

Spark web site says: "Mobile Data currently unavailable. Spark is working closely with the local provider to restore data services as soon as possible." Was there some incident?

Guessing I would say data roaming agreement gone sour and they got chopped off
Countries are added to the Roaming pack list when the wholesale rates between the local carrier(s) and Spark are low enough to make a roaming pack financially viable in that destination. At this point the rates in the Cook Islands aren't where they need to be. Correct, roaming data services are unavailable in the Cook Islands until further notice. roaming voice and text are still available. If you require data I would suggest using local Wi-Fi services. Regards Andrew Roaming Commericals - Spark NZ

Or buy a local SIM  but last time I was there they were expensive.

@old3eyes This is pointless if the customer is required to use NZ number!

Please see thread title it clearly states Roaming and that is not getting a local SIM card

Yep and over the past few years there have been numerous threads here from people saying "Buy a local SIM  don't roaming  it's too expensive"    Maybe people have a lot more money these days and prefer to roam I don't know..

andyb: Walk off Working has had a name change its now called Auto Buy Roaming. Once its enabled, the selected roaming pack will be automatically purchased once you use roaming services in a pack country. Additional packs will be automatically applied as they expire or an allocation is used. Its the sure fire way to avoid casual charges in a pack country (as long as you don't disable it mid trip!)

Bingo, there is why i couldnt find it!

thanks Andrew! didn't realize you were about here :)

Not on Spark  to Ozz.  2015 $40 / month. 2019 $80 / month.  Not cheaper.

You aren't comparing apples with apples. If I remember correctly the Aussie pack in 2015 for $40 lasted for a month, the allowance was 500MB, 100 min in and out, and 100 text. The current packs are now weekly (due to overwhelming feedback from customers who felt travelling for a week meant the remaining allowance was "wasted", and the fact that the average trip duration is around 4 days), they are 1GB, 200 min in and out and 200 text. Packs were also destination specific so you couldn't use the Aussie pack in the UK, US or Asia (for example) - now the single pack can be used in 40 odd destinations. Yes, it does now cost $80 if you were there for a month (4 weeks x $20/week), but you are getting 8 times more data, text and minutes...

Yes you are correct.  I had forgotten about the 100 minutes only on this pack. I just checked my 2015 phone bill and it was $39 / month.  Anyway I will set the finance committee up for roaming when we go. As it's for 14 days I'm sure she can ring and talk to her  mother and visa versa for quite along time 😁

If your device has eSIM you could always use...
- eSIM which Spark now support for roaming calls and texts
- local SIM solely for the data which Spark doesn't currently support in the Cook Islands

Could you folks stop with power quote? I am going to give you folks a week in the cooler - a few seconds trimming your quotes is worth more than a week away, right?

Then @ someone and reply. No need to power quote and make a wall of text that covers pages and pages.
