The new plans, effectively immediately, are designed to take advantage of Telecom's recent ADSL2+ upgrades, where customers who live within 2km of an upgraded exchange can receive faster broadband speeds.

How many .. in NZ live within 2 k??

around 50% I think.

As more and more cabinets are added that number will go up of course.

ummm, what do you mean by that, other than your connection speed there is no imposed limit that can or should be changed.

sounds like i MAY want to be paying my $90 early disconnection fee for slingshot and hopping back onto the telecom juggernaut when they give out their 6 mths free promotion over christmas! (the dilemma is that too much speed w adsl 2 = 2x the speed of usage of bandwidth by 'the others' in the house)

just one Q that i wasnt clear on - so the $60/20Gig plan - is it ADSL2? and what speeds do i expect? (my Halswell CHCH area apparently has adsl2 infrastructure)

Hi JK, all telecom plans are ADLS2+ (if your connected on ISAM), there is no limit imposed (to my knowledge), the notes they supply showing ADSL2+ compatible plans simply relate to plans with a 128k uplink, which will normally limit TCP traffic to around 4.5Mb/s even if your modem was solidly syncing at 24Mb/s downstream. So what they are saying, to achieve ADSL2+ speeds (even full ADSL1) you will need to be on a FS/FS plan, but all connections are at ADSL2+ if you are on a ADSL2+ exchange and within 2-2.5km to made use of that connection advantage.

To establish what speeds you can achieve we need to know your modem sync speed.

i was under the misunderstanding that the upgrades were for only customers that lived close to the exchange and had the abilty to have adsl 2 Cyril

Basically it means:

If you are on a DSL2+ enabled exchange/cabinet: You'll get a FS/FS connection, which will offer you the best DSL2+ performance* that your line can deliver.
If you are on a DSL enabled exchange/cabinet: You'll still get a FS/FS connection, but it will be DSL1 only. So you'll get the best DSL performance* that your line can deliver.

* ie. you won't be hindered by the previous 128kbps upload limit. Any line/exchange/cabinet issues would still apply :)

So regardless of whether you are on DSL2+ or not, you can take advantage of these plans.

I'm really confused.

Previously with Xtra.
"The Go Large plan was supposed to be a non-cap, max speed DSL plan, with managed bandwidth."

Now we are being offered a new plan with (and I quote from Xtra) "no artificial speed caps and throttling" that allows us more data. If go-large failed how do they hope to implement this without failure?

Faster speeds, more data, no throttling - pay less - Maybe I am paranoid but when offered something that looks too good to be true with the only catch having to be tied in for 24 months, then I get suspicious.

Currently i have told World Communications "the people hounding me on xtra's behalf" that I will not change my customers over yet. I have adsl2 compatible routers in all my sites now, none of them makes better connection than before - despite xtra supposedly upgrading stuff.

Why would xtra charge me less for better service, faster speeds and more data?
How will xtra provide those things they have failed to provide previously?

What happens when torrents end up on business lines - there have been problems at other ISPs with torrents not being throttled and chewing up bandwidth so web browsing users cant browse properly. Maybe I am paranoid but!!! This is xtra we are talking about.

Got a letter re the new plans for my own business. Look - they might consider me a business again, having previously decided to lump my business with home users as my DNS isn't with xtra.

Gripes aside - here is the funny bit -

"We're giving you an extra 25GB on your plan for free" (from 15 to 40GB)
"....you will receive 40GB.... for the same price you're paying now. That's more than three times the amount of data you currently receive, for the same money"

I don't know where they went to school but when I was young 40GB was not more than three times 15GB. Any number over 45Gb might count as three times more but not 40.

And people wonder why I am paranoid about xtra as my isp - offering more for less - their maths is differnt to mine so maybe I'll end up with less for more?
