Thanks Spyware.

 

That would have come from the Basic wizard setup in which I selected Internet Port / Internet Connection Type / PPPoE, as oposed to DHCP or Static IP.

 

Should I have selected one of the otehers or used a different wizard?

Choose static and assign the IP address you want on eth0.

 

EDIT: it may be if using wizard that you apply temporary address to WAN as won't assign 192.168.1.0/24 address to eth0 when network already on eth1.
