nztim: Good old NEAX days are numbered now, switch by switch they are getting shut down..... good news for 61K connected customers who have not had any Caller ID or other smartphone services which should become standard with this move

The additional charge for caller id really irritates. It would be nice if it was 'standard' ; ).

Historically most likely needed updated line cards hence the extra cost .  I think on fiber it's free  .

And you had to be connected to an E switch like those in the news clip, K switches didn’t support it

When I was on the Miramar 61k I did have some services like 3 way calling (very handy as a relay for free toll calls) but caller id was missing. I was told that you couldn't move to the RLUs at Miramar and keep your old number but after about 10 years got migrated anyway and kept number. We got letters advising what new services including Clid were now available. At the time the story went that enough Miramar people had moved to TelstraClear that the remaining Telecom customers were being moved to the RLUs off CPC.
I really am surprised that the 61k is apparently still there.

I'm on Vodafone fibre with homeline, and I get charged $4.09 monthly for CallerID.

Do many folks have land lines these days. Businesses maybe but residential. I don't know what the metrics are but based on the my circle of contacts I would say not a lot. I have friends, family business contacts ranging from young to elderly and at a guess I would say 1-2% have land lines. One only has one for a legacy alarm system.

Over 70 age group yes.  Otherwise landlines are rare

richms: Any telco would have to be staffed by idiots to want to take on a copper voice customer in these areas onto their own equipment.

You don't have your own equipment, you give chorus a SIP details and the same piece of equipment already in place that provides DSL for your customer registers so your SIP server and provides dial tone

This is already in place in most areas and until Chorus get the go ahead after the 111 code is in place to switch off copper

assuming chorus have ISAM-V cards installed there. They aren't everywhere.

You are getting ripped off, on a SIP line it should be standard
