Consumer NZ named PB Tech a while back as potentially falling foul of this at one stage and they had to rush to get a solution for some of the phones they sold).

This was it eh? https://archive.ph/htGeK

Yeah that was the example I was thinking of, forgot TCF was also leading the charge on calling that out too. Was discussed quite a bit in one of the more general 3G switch off threads at the time.

This happened in Australia, despite their hardline stance on phone compatibility. I know my older Samsung phone would step down to 3G anytime your tried to call 111, and that was a fairly new phone just 2-3 years ago. Probably it may have since got an update to fix this, but I'd say there will be a lot of VoLTE capable phones still around in NZ that won't call 111.

Hi. Im getting warnings on my phone about it using 3G, and warning that 3G is going to be turned off
Warnings via txt & a warnings when I try to call someone

I posted this in the other thread but I read a story on The Spinoff this morning which reminded me of this line:

https://thespinoff.co.nz/internet/13-12-2025/the-phones-that-will-stop-working-with-nzs-3g-shutdown

The best tactic to get people to upgrade their phones is to be extremely irritating: having a pre-recorded message placed before a phone call goes through warning that the device will stop working. “In Australia this was so annoying that people were literally walking in and throwing their phones on the desks at the service providers,” Brislen said. “It’s really annoying and it really works.”.

It seems to have worked for Spark by the looks 🙂

@1101: did your new phone work in the end?

Yes , no issues with the new phone . No more warning messages :-)
Also nicer screen, slighter better camera , enough memory that I dont need a micro SDcard .
