NealR: @exportgoldman I was not aware that the two XT Network USB modems were software upgradable to HSPA+ (aka 21Mbps)

Your right they are not upgradable to HSPA+

The only true HSPA+ card now on the market is the Sierra wireless 306 & 307. The 306 made for XT & the 307 for Vodafone 3G extended. http://www.sierrawireless.com/product/USB306_307.aspx

The Compass 885 is firmware upgradable to 5.72mpbs HSUPA (HSPA/HSPA+) but the down load is no different.

The MF636 is only 2mbps upload and is not upgradable http://www.zte.com.au/main/MF636.htm

The key advantage of the Sierra wireless is the external RF port & the upgradable upload speeds in the future. Thats worth $200 bucks easy over the MF636 but for most people that means little.

Hi

Have friend that has one of these and coverage does appear to be an issue. I mentioned this thread and wonder if anyone can suggest somewhere to buy an antenna mentioned in some posts. I havent seen the device so not even sure where it would go.

Hmm just put my xt sim into a xt phone and it works straight away, just won't work on my voda e71 where I know it is 2100mhz or my data card...

Is being able to make a call and receive a call in an xt phone not activating the sim?

scottjpalmer: Another option for laptop users is to check if your device has a WWAN miniPCIE slot and the relevant antennas built in. You can then buy a a module off ebay cheap 2nd hand and avoid the hassle of having to plug in a USB or otherwise device and carry said device with you.

I have put a Novatel Wireless EU870D in my Dell XPS M1330 and it is working great. I was limited for choice as Dell lock the BIOS to only take the modules they supply so I only get 384k or whatever it is upload but it works well.

There is also another option if you can use your smartphone as a wireless modem. That way you would not need to buy a separate modem.
I use my Jasjam WM6 as a modem on Telecom XT Network. I used to have a Vodafone SIM in it but the connection was slooooow so now I hap chewing away my Data Plan faster.

My gadgets:
NEC Versa S3200 Laptop running Linux Mint 9 and Win XP

3x I-mate Jasjam, one running WM6.1 and others WM5.1, all working with VF and Telecom XT
Canon Powershot SX120 Digital camera
Various old phones like Nokia 6310, Nokia 6610 and ancient Nokia 1610, all with carkits.
Greenspeed Gto recumbent trike with Rohloff 14 speed Speedhub, altogether 42 speed.
No TV, no microwave and no washing machine. ( Not enough space in my van for those) I live a mobile lifestyle, call me nomad if you wish but gypsy I am not.
Have started my epic journey from Bluff to Cape Reinga on my recumbent trike supported with my van so I can carry all my gadgets with me and sleep in a comfy bed.
