adresdendoll: the $200 is the early termination charge. I was a new customer, hence the 12 contract. I have changed the plan but I am not happy that I have had too. I changed ISP's specifically for the big time plan, now I am locked into a term with Telecom on a plan that does not suit..

The fact that Telecom believes that 0.5Mbs for web browsing is acceptable is appalling to me.

How long were you singed up? You may have recourse under the Credit Contracts and Consumer Finance Act 2003

Or, if the plan is not performing as advertised, you could have recourse under the Fair Trading Act.

Im on Big Time plan and I just did a speed test with speedtest.net, im in Wellington so I used the server from there, it was extremly slow and only getting 0.5MB/s, I redid the test on the Auckland server and got 2.2MB/s.

Nooot bad:) and its 6PM.

The plan can't be that bad

Ouch man, it's 7.50pm now:

Alright ping to the states :), on the LA server which I stupidly did SD i get round 300 this is while playing COD5 on my PS3 woohoo

I'm in Wellington too

The ping to Telstra is bad because when you do a tracert it's running through LA and back :S

Everything on this end is running nicely though :) downloads are cruising along, youtube, tomshardware, gizmodo etc

Ring telecom up, ask them about interleaving to be switched off(to bring your pings down)

Also upgrade your modems firmware and possibly put a statis telecom DNS into the router. Mines on a static DNS and I've manually set each PCs IP and opened up the relevant ports for gaming/internet browsing

Well, I'm on bigtime and the time is 8.00pm - peaktime friday night and I'm d/ling 2 torrents.
One is going at 130 KB/s and the other is going at 58 KB/s which is ok for a shaped connection ...
Both have a lot of peers 79 and 40 which seems to be the key for speed as well.
Downloading from 1 or 2 peers is really slow.

But the inbetween 2am and 9am its really fast 700KB/s

Yeah definitely, my..linux torrents are going real well, I'm having trouble deciding which distrubution to download next as they all finish within the morning

I finally was awake late enough to use the net during "off peak" and I was much less than impressed, most websites barely reached dial up speed yet at 7pm, everything ticks along fine, not turbocharged but nothing like the "off peak" hours.

Interestingly, national traffic is significantly faster than international all the time, nothing on what other people have managed but more than adequate for general use.

Just wondering if anyone on this plan could say if the connection itself is as stable as it was on their previous plan?

I play online poker so I want to make sure I'm not going to experience more timeouts than usual (which is not many) if I jump to this plan and then try playing during peak times.

Is that what most of Big Time users experience during peak hour? ie. browsing speed at 9am~2am averages around 0.5Mbps (~60KB/s)? Or should I ask what your average peak hour browsing speeds are?

I'm currently with Xnet, and my speed can vary between 10~200KB/s, but I get really pissed off when my speed gets down to the 10~20KB/s range.

If the server is hosted in the US then currently in peak time from 6pm-11pm you will get ~300ms latency on requests instead of the normal ~150ms, whether this is noticeable or will result in timeouts will depend on the game. Probably wouldn't be noticeable in a web based game (as opposed to a half life, left 4 dead etc).

Depends what you mean by general web browsing. I have no problem performance wise accessing my email accounts via their web ui's (eg: gmail, hotmail) or via IMAP. No problem with performance on Facebook or generally looking at web. However if you are talking about watching video from sites other than youtube eg: vimeo, break, college humor etc these are all actually large http downloads and are managed. It varies depending on time of day and day of the week.

really good speeds, i get only around say 150 or so in non peak hours. in peak is very slow - like 5/10KB/s

can anyone please suggest what can be done to improve speeds.

any help is appreciated

As a test what speed do you get downloading Ubuntu on and off peak?

****BIG TIME****

I am now on telecoms new big time plan i find that during the hours of 3pm-5pm you get a crappy conection however all other hours are great...

this month i have downloaded 126.54gb of material so far

I would reccomend it to anyone who loves the internet

I'm finding that games are lagging very very badly. I have been playing alot of COD4 lately and lag to AU servers can get upwards of 600ms in the evenings!

ahem ... you download from seeds the more the better
you upload to peers the fewer the better
the higher the seed:peer ratio the faster the download and vice versa
