radionut: The device I plan to use is the MF626 stick modem, specs are:

Network and Band compatibility:

HSDPA/UMTS 2100 MHz
HSDPA/UMTS 1900 MHz
HSDPA/UMTS 850 MHz
GSM/GPRS/EDGE 1900 MHz
GSM/GPRS/EDGE 1800 MHz
GSM/GPRS/EDGE 900 MHz
GSM/GPRS/EDGE 850 MHz

Telstra APN is telstra.internet

You will need to set this as the default APN in the ZTE Telecom Connection Manager with the dial string *99# and you should be away after you activate the SIM with Telstra.

I'm sure if you go to one of their shops they will give you the in's and out's if you're not confident to just buy a $2 SIM and wing it so to speak.

oh my god, i think ill just use vodafone, im not going anywhere in the middle of the desert so ill be fine coverage wise :) ive checked. and i get like 500MB for 19 bucks! vodafone pleeeaseandthankyou :)

You will still need the Vodafone AU APN, the dial string is still *99#, and set it as default, other than that it will be fine.

Then just go to the settings menu and find where you enter the APN settings if you require internet access, calls and TXT's should just work. You may need to define the SMS Center number, if so make sure you note down the Telecom default one so you can enter these settings when you're back in NZ.

i did the same a couple of months ago.

I walked into a vodafone store. Bought the sim pack with some free included credit. Think it cost me around $50aud. Activations was a pain in the butt, think they wanted 3 forms of id . The automated voice recognition system could not recognise my kiwi accent either.

This gave me enough data and talk time to last the trip. 3g was great. Many hotels over there are backward and their version of 'internet access' is for you to plug your phone into a jack and use your dial up modem. Especially so at resorts.
