MikeyPI: Ronindanbo, Are you aware of how opposition politics works? You dont blithely agree with the current govt, you take any populist topic, try and link it to the current admin, and campaign hard.

Goffs about to start his anti-GST hike tour now, exact same blue print.

If you think Labour / National are any better / worse than each other, your on a slippery slide to fooling yourself.
Can you please detail your "knowledge" of the history of XT?

My political opinions are my own, no I would not care to 'detail' my knowledge of what went on behind the scenes, suffice to say that you should be able to find it yourself as it was all part of the negotiations under the guise of the Communications Comission, I will tell you this that when the government of the day was threatening Telecom with a physical split (worse than the logical one we ended up with) it was not only copper wire they were talking about removing to the network arm.

I worked for Telecom for three years over the time of the commerce commission negotiations. What you should be asking yourself is why a government enquiry should be secret? This stuff should all be out in the public domain. (probably buried under a wall of words?).

Secret to everybody but Telecom employees huh? Unless your secretly Gatting sticking up for the old crew.
Ask the US admin, basing your argument on secret information that only you know about doesnt win any debates.

Labour have to talk about stuff like this to distract people from asking "so what have _you_ been using your credit cards for?"

Plus they have nothign else really to complain about at the moment.

Paul rang Stephen Joyce to advise what the situation was. Semantics? I think not.

How does a the government "launch an enquiry" into a private company?

I see one of the problems with Labours position is that if you launch an enquiry into Telecom, what's the next company that they want to investigate.

This then leads to a position of any 'large' company asking the question "Do we want to do business in NZ?" Or at a time when we need to be encouraging foreign investment, companies hesitating.

What is Labours position? Opposition party.. Thats what you do, react to populist opinion, critise the current government, and tell the public what you think they SHOULD be doing..

Nobody is investigating anything, do people have selective hearing?
They oppose the GST hike (althought for good reason), they will support the driving age lifting until Select Committee, then probably hijack the process for publicity.

All they are trying to do is make people think the government is inactive on National problems, and start to blame the government for related issues.

And how much equipment would his salary get when you consider the portion of his salary that is spent on Telecommunications time? He has 3 portfolios that he minister plus 2 where he is associate minister? So whats that? About $50k in equipment?

Don't get me wrong with any of this. I believe someone needs to be held accountable for the decisions that were made, if indeed it turns out to be an underinvestment in equipment or poor planning. But it is up to the shareholders of the company to push for that and not the government, unless its actions have a detrimental effect on the country. Now if the landlines had had 4 outages since xmas, different story, but with mobile there are a couple of other solutions.

Heck, if it were my business mobile, and I was loosing business, I would've gone out, spent my $2 for a 2degree sim and demanded my calls be forwarded to this number for free, which I know from past experience, would be done.

If your business was important you would have planned for the failuer of one handset or provider and already had an alternative available.
