I have run 2 different sorts of spyware / adaware programs all on PC's and they both so nothing.

Stats show I have up loaded 6 Gigs since March 8th.

I understand. My comment is only to say that the 1:1 upload-download ratio seems higher than I might have expected for someone not hosting a server or using VOIP or peer-to-peer protocols. Like you I don't host servers or run other applications that use a lot of upload bandwidth and for comparison, my upload-download ratio is something like 1:10. The fact that 2 different adware programs come up with nothing only means that your PCs don't have any of the spyware that they know about. There's nothing stopping it from being something else they don't know about or a legitimate program that is doing something that you didn't expect...

Are you able to check whether the usage is uniform (ie. whether usage is pretty much the same from day to day in both amount and upload-download ratio) via your ISP?

Not wanting to imply exactly what you have got yourself into, you claim, and probably quite right that you are up with the play, but in the last month I have dealt with probably eight clients who have for whatever reason installed bit torrent clients mainly to access movies as advised by "mates" and ended up trucking through 10-20G of unexplained data whiles the bit torrent client has seeded their PC as a node for every tom dick and harry.

When you point it out they first deny they would do anything like that, then show them the clients setup and what it is currently doing, in some cases the documented stats of the seeds its served, all adding up to the data cap they have busted.................. they have no idea.

My advise, pay for your music, pay for your vids, pay for your software, otherwise someone on a torrent comes along and poops in you puter, all bad, there is no fee lunch.

Rant over

Cyril

Sorry if my last post sounds like an out of control rant, but really I have seen this stuff too often, and everyone pleads ignorance.

Repeat there is no free lunch.

No worries, as long as you know what you are looking for, each time I have come against folk with these issues they have no idea what they may or may not have done, as I said obviously you are aware, many say they are but infact are totally out of it.

I just found an email in outlook from Xtra, that I overlooked from early March saying that they thought spam was being sent from my email. I bet that's it, right ??!!
If I remove Outlook will that possibly stop it or will I need to get a Techy to look at PC ?

You could just enter the incorrect account details into Outlook and see if the data usage still goes up? If it still climbing, then it will not be the problem.

Well that data isn't exactly uniform is it?Embarassed Sealed Download is relatively high on some days but the upload ratio still seems obviously out of the ordinary. The most obvious explanations for high upload bandwidth usage have already been mentioned earlier. If you're certain that nobody that uses your computers is using the data, that you haven't got virus/spyware problems, and that nobody is stealing your internet via wireless then I've only got one more idea. There is an outside chance that someone else is using your ISP account. It is a long shot, but worth a check. I can do this with my ISP (Maxnet) by logging in to my account and checking "who is online". There should only be one user...

If nobody else is using the ISP account then one of the assumptions (nobody using the bandwidth, virus/spyware, wireless leech etc.) is likely to be wrong. The only way to find out what is going on is to monitor each computer on your network until you find the culprit, then disconnect it until you can find the cause.

Good luck! Smile

Not sure if it has been covered, but if you have teenage children, then start there...I know I used to drive my parents crazy with blowing caps (first dial-up hours, then the 5GB jetstart international cap), and pleaded ignorance the whole time...

The way data is counted is tied to your line, not your login... In fact it's possible to authenticate with a generic username password combo so you don't even need to have your username in the router.

I noticed you posted some daily usage figures earlier... Is one of the calendar days a day during which the router was turned off for all 24 hours?

Cheers - Neil G

Actually, have you turned the router off 24 hours as requested days ago?

Must be different to the way Maxnet does things - was just a suggestion... Sounds like the cause has possibly been identified anyway.
