coffeebaron: I have the answer - Vodafone should turn off GSM tomorrow, problem solved, plenty of 900 for 3G :)
(yes, I'm not serious)

Think of all the inbound roamers coming into NZ using the 2G network

Japan seems to get on OK with inbound roamers while not having GSM available.

I wonder how many people turn up in Japan and try attaching to the Japan WCDMA only networks with a GSM only device.

I can tell you now quite a few I have many a email from Staff asking why a Vodafone NZ customer can't see the network when doing a manual network selection. In fact I had one today or Yesterday

Same reply have they got a 3G device if Yes make sure its not locked to GSM only

But why on earth are Vodafone still selling 2G handsets? I can understand keeping up the 2G network for backwards compatibility but why keep selling 2G mobile phones? "Yeah, well, we're going to move to 3G but we'll keep selling you 2G phones" - am in the only person who finds such a policy sending out mixed signals to the consumer?

quickymart: 2G coverage is better than 3G - it goes a lot further, from my experience. That's probably one of the reasons they haven't turned it off. Not everyone uses their network for data.

This isn't true. WCDMA using the same frequency can easily exceed that of GSM when you're comparing the two technologies using the same frequency, ie GSM900 vs WCDMA 900. It's also not subject to the distance limitations of TDMA based technologies.

Probably because a lot of their customers still only use the network for Voice and SMS, so there's no point having them use up the 3G capacity.

Audiophiles are such twits! They buy such pointless stuff: Gold plated cables, $2000 power cords. Idiots.

I seem to remember reading somewhere in the last month that Vodafone will be keeping GSM going until 2020 so if GSM is the reason that Voda is not rolling out 3G on 900 in the metro areas then there will be a long wait..

Vodafone have a few sites around running 3G 2100/900 and GSM 900

sbiddle - Hey, I just said it was from my own experience - I didn't say it was absolute fact.
I know large parts of the Coast simply do not get XT, but get okay VF 3G, and excellent VF 2G coverage. Of course, this isn't representative of every single centimetre of New Zealand.

And muppet, yes, that's what I was trying to say.

Move to New Zealand's best fibre broadband service (affiliate link). Free setup code: R587125ERQ6VE. Note that to use Quic Broadband you must be comfortable with configuring your own router.

Which coast? And is it with a 900MHz capable phone on VF? Was the XT phone tested one of the pieces of crap by ZTE that seem to be rather insensitive?

The West Coast. I didn't test it myself, but the coverage on their map looks to be much less than Vodafone's. My mother has an LG (not sure of the model) on Telstra that roams on XT here. Good coverage on the North Shore, but gets nothing at a particular spot on the Coast, which gets full 3G on Vodafone.
