The Internet was not designed as a software distribution medium, so you shouldn't download ISOs and things. Instead, you should purchase licensed software in shops. It's ISO downloading leeches like you who spoilt it for the rest of us, and force bigger than 200MB caps on people who don't want them and don't need them.

Exactly. Nobody needs broadband, or even wants it. This is something that Victoria University researcher Bronwyn Howell noted in 2003 already (article pulled by stuff; link has a short excerpt only). From memory, Howell said that the Kiwi lifestyle's the reason why broadband uptake is low here and what would we do with it anyway apart from downloading pr0n?

I don't understand why the government is promoting it. Why is Telecom providing a service nobody wants? It's a crazy waste of money and time.

Well I can't remember the last ISO, I downloaded, no wait I can, It was Red Hat 8....now that's going back a while. Actually most of my data is used up distributing / downloading uncompressed DV video for various projects I work on.

And as for pr0n, never watched it. i see the occasional pop up or banner add but that’s about it.

P.s. juha If that was aimed at me, I don't appreciate personal attacks, if not then I apologize for my assumption.

So i'm a leech now? Thats nice!

Well for starters the ISOs i download are perfectly legal and can't be brought in a shop and I pay for my music downloads.

Nobody is forcing a big cap on anybody. Telecom have a 200Mb plan and nobody is stopping you from using it. When you start telling people why they can and can't do on the internet......that smells of interference and censorship.

The internet may not have been designed as a software distribution medium but it has become an effective and efficient one!

You are making far too many assumptions here. I could not live without broadband internet access. As a part owner of a web design firm business would suffer without it.

Just because you dont feel you have a need for broadband doesnt mean you can make that assumption for the rest of us. try telling Mauricio he doesnt need his cable......

The internet was designed for an entirely different purpose for what it is being used for today, agreed but you'd be lucky to find a piece of software out there today that doesn't use the internet in some form or other.  What about patches?  Are we supposed to wait patiently for Microsoft to distribute service packs via CD?  Those service packs were enormous, plus there are regular downloads every month not just for MS patches - there's anti-spyware and anti-virus updates as well.  Linux is another classic example - it's very difficult to find the latest distributions and packages in any store - you have to download them.

Do you think Google's business plan of providing services via the internet is a bad idea?  They don't involve downloading large ISOs, but they certainly do chew through bandwidth.  Ever tried using Google Earth?

What about movie distribution via the internet.  Already providers in some countries without data caps are providing rental movies downloadable from the internet.

Obviously this is not for everyone and I wouldn't expect someone who just uses the internet for email and a bit of surfing to pay the same as someone using it intensively.  In countries with no data caps, in effect the people who use the internet lightly subsidise the heavy users - that's not really fair.  I think data caps as they are now are reasonable - I believe you should pay for what you get.  But I also think that data caps will increase as time goes on - services will spring up that use more bandwidth.  If people are willing to pay for larger caps, why stop them?

Why are you building your business on a service that nobody wants or needs? That's even crazier.

If we didn't have broadband, there wouldn't be a need for Mauricio to have cable either.

It's like a vicious circle, isn't it?

Well you could say we don't need mobile phones, or computers or even cars  But that’s just being silly, the technology is there what is wrong with using it?

You are not taking in consideration that each person has different values from the next one. I value information, and freedom to find it.

I don't think downloading ISO images is the problem. Why don't you complain about the developers who create software releases so large that require a DVD-sized image for install?

Juha, I think on this one I disagree with you.

OK, I'll stop now with....

I WAS JUST KIDDING!

I couldn't do what I do without broadband.

Data caps are bad, ditto slow speeds and high latency. I was wondering the other day what GZ would be like on dial-up.... might try actually. Got Xtra DSL - doesn't that give me dial-up access too?

Nobody wants? Thats funny because the business is doing very well, the staff are working flat out and we are employing more staff. We have built sites for companies that allow their wholesale clients to order online speeding up delivery time and cutting costs. Dont tell me there is no need.

Thats not true, although I cannot answer for him I'm going to say that backing up Geekzone would be next to impossible with dialup. Broadband is a neccesary tool for many people.

The internet is a very valuable tool, makes  many things easier, online banmking etc.

That brings me to question what are you doing on Geekzone?

An interesting thing about the ISPs overseas that provide unlimited caps is that most of them have some fine print that says something like "usage must be reasonable".  So what they do is they save a ton of money by not having to implement a billing system that tracks usage.  Instead they just skim the usage statistics to find the heaviest users and send them threatening letters to cut back usage or they'll be disconnected.

I dunno if they'll work very well in NZ as a lot of people seem to have the attitude that if it's there, then use it.

I think a good compromise would be to provide both capped and uncapped services.  It seems there are very few options for people who want an unmetered service nowadays.

I have to say this is probably one of the most prolific troll thread we ever had here...

I say, let's lock it down now.
