If you're worried about the elements when you're in the bush, stick it in a small zip lock bag. You'll still be able to use it without removing it from the bag.

Make sure you put some silica gel packets in there to!!!
A sure fire way to kill a mobile phone is to throw it in a plastic bag and let it sit in the warm... if there is any residual moisture it will kill the phone.
Thanks for the ideas - I'll implement those. I have to find an old sock too - I'm not paying $$$ for some poxy aftermarket "gel case" and more $$$ for a "screen protector".
It took about an hour in the Telecom shop for them to port my number to the new phone and set up my "One Bill" account, and I had to show ID, have the old phone, sign about 6 things, yadda yadda. The phone isn't recognised by the XT network yet, but that can take 5 hours apparently.
I'll report back in this thread on my experiences with the phone, GPS included. So far, from the little play I've had, it looks OK. The screen? Well, maybe it's crap compared to others out there, but compared to the bitmap B/W 1" screen on my old Nokia T100, it's incredible!
First (random) impressions - remember, I'm really new at this smartphone and android thing.
WiFi's up. No problems entering SSID for "hidden" AP; no probs finding the MAC address to put into the AP's permissions table.
GPS locked in OK - gave my location to within 10m, mind you, that was under a clear sky outside.
Floundering a bit moving all the silly icons around and removing ones I don't want. No help requested yet, I haven't even read the manual so it may be in there.
I can access my Vu+ Duo satellite box through its web interface, but when I try to stream content - no dice. The download type isn't recognised. That interface isn't ideal anyway, but it was an easy first attempt. I really want to get SMB going, but even then, I think I'll have to transcode my video files which would be both slow and daft. I may look at configuring VLC to transcode on the fly and stream to the phone. (All so I don't have to wander into the lounge and turn on the 50" plasma, so not really a major problem if it doesn't work.)
No progress on offline maps yet (haven't tried), but it pulled up the appropriate maps over WiFi/AP/ADSL once the satellite lock happened, which did take a while. Haven't found a simple "You are at lat/long" thing yet or just a simple compass, but it could be lurking among the icons. What's "Latitude"? I gave it a blast and there was some screen about registering with google so I wasn't in a hurry to do that. I do have a gmail account,but I don't anticipate using the phone for email anyway. It took a while to find where to set an alarm. Took a photo. Low light, but really crappy. No biggie. Virtual keyboard is a bit of a trial for those with stubby fingers. I was surprised that I couldn't rotate the main screen.
No network cover as expected, and so I can't do any actual "phone" stuff, even if the number has been ported yet.
$169 with a SIM card and a 2GB SD card so far is seeming like a decent price. I see from The Warehouse site that they are now "sold out" of the X1 - maybe I got the last one!

I don't think there's one standard. There's a bunch in the Market, I use GPS Test.

No joy yet with any sort of access to network shares. I'm getting close, but for some reason my user name and password are being rejected. Also, haven't found an app for playing .TS files yet.
--- The "Contacts" thing seems a bit limited with just two fields: name and phone number. Inconsistent too since when I did sign in to my gmail account, the contacts that came from there had other data also.
Sweeet! I attached the phone via its USB cable to my iMac. Nothing useful seemed to happen though. A read-only volume with nothing interesting did get mounted. But ... in the notification bar on the phone, the USB event was registered, and clicking that puts the phone in USB Mass Storage mode, and the SD card appeared as a volume on my Mac desktop. File transfers are possible that way. I'm just copying a couple of jpgs and a big MP4 to see if that will work.
I've got a bit of a beef with that notification bar too. I'd like to get rid of the one that tells me that 3G data is disabled. I know. And the trouble is that if I inadvertently click on it, it's going to connect even though I don't want it to. That's happened once already, and only the fact that I'm out of network coverage stopped it.
One hardware problem exists: the back button is unreliable. I have to press several times, and get better results when I press the screen near it instead. Bummer. I'll see how I feel in a few days, but at the moment, I'm thinking that's a defect that warrants a return.
A small glitch too with getting hooked up to XT. I had a call from Telecom to say that it would not be 4-5 hours as I'd been told, but 3+ days owing to the need to advise 2 degrees of the number port or some such. I'm OK with that - it has to be done.
