tardtasticx: Cheers bartender but I'm not planning on going on contract. Ill deff. Think about getting the 4S if its not that much diff. Can you buy the 4S on telecom without contracts? I know vodafone won't let you.

Not at the moment, strictly contract only until more stock arrives AFAIK

Lazy is such an ugly word, I prefer to call it selective participation

That's true. They'd have the most stock out of everyone I'm guessing. How long does shipping take? And they cost slightly more than telecom don't they? Plus I still then have to go pay for a microsim later. Prob will buy with telecom in store.

Apple Online Store: http://store.apple.com/nz/browse/home/shop_iphone/family/iphone/iphone4s reported estimate of 1-2 weeks though could be sooner.

I hate you all for convincing me to get the 4S now xD
Now the tough part, finding where to get it without going on contract, AND I refuse to get it shipped to my house. The courier throws items at our doors. Seriously. He's smashed a bottle of wine on our door once that was sent from South Africa. Not cool. I don't care what store, what provider, whatever, just not going on contract and it has to be unlocked.

The primary places would be Apple Store, Vodafone or Telecom. All should provide a factory unlocked phone that will work on any of the networks.

There are plenty of the other big name retailers who sell them, but AFAIK nobody has any great amount of physical stock.

I don't know what the story is with the various sellers who parallel import phones as to whether they are totally unlocked etc. Perhaps someone in that field can help?

You may find the best option would be the Apple Store, and ship it to work, or another address where your local courier is not working!

Of course, (having just convinced you the 4s is a better deal), there are stocks of the 8GB 4 at various retailers...

The courier by the way is TNT, not CourierPost who likely delivers all the stuff you get normally. So don't worry about your local courier as they wouldn't be delivering it anyway.

If you already have a plan with Telecom, they'll let you buy the phone... wonder if you could do it just having a landline maybe? I know both Telecom and Vodafone can be pretty rigid, might be worth picking up the phone and calling one of them.

The courier for me (with Telecom) was definitely CourierPost, not TNT. Yes, you can buy it just by having a landline.

Spoke to someone at Telecom who said that as of the 15th of December, they will be selling the iPhone 4S on PrePaid.

I meant if you buy from Apple.  If you're going to buy it from Telecom, you'd be silly to do it online rather than in a store where you can (theoretically) try and wrangle a good deal.

So... mum got an iPhone 4S 16GB Black today.
Didn't have to pay a cent.
Heres how it went:

Her boss came back to her office with an iPad, which is apparently meant to cut down on paper use at meetings. So her boss called IT, and spoke to them.

Shortly after, mum gets a call.

"Ok so you can come down to Basement level and get your new phone."
"Why? I have one"
"But your Blackberry is broken"
"No it isn't"
"Your Blackberry had an accident and is now broken. Come and get a new phone. Now"
"oh..."

>< some people... At least now on Telecoms site they sell them off contract. So I've done my hours this week, and next Thursday, off to that store, getting me a phone too :D

She said they gave out 17 iPhones that day. That would have to be the BEST job in the world. Handing out things like that would be so cool. /geek
