Granted, I was half asleep, but after ordering direct from apple i have no idea which specific model I'll be getting. I didn't see any options other than colour and gigs. It did say GSM though.

OK, so I am rural NZ so at the moment I can only use telecom mobile network as the others don't have coverage in our area. However I want a phone I can use world wide as I am travelling extensively next year. I was told to buy my iphone 5 online from the apple store and that way I get a phone that is unlocked "worldwide". But it seems that I can only get the GSM phone and telecom isn't GSM yet?? Am I right or am I missing something? HELP I want to order my new iphone now, but don't want to make a mistake

Nope you are not right! Approx where do you live?

Telecom will never have a GSM network they run 100% 3G WCDMA 850Mhz network

Order a iPhone online or from Telecom and you will be fine

Apple advertises it as a GSM model but it also supports WCDMA used by Telecom. All iPhones with the exception of the original 2007 model will work with Telecom.

Thanks guys, I understand what you are saying - it will work for 3g no problem, but it's the 4g LTE where the difference becomes critical from what I have read.

From what I've read so far about the LTE trials in NZ:
Telecom - would use 1800MHz and 2600MHz spectrum in the trial.
Vodafone - will shortly announced its own 4G trial, utilizing 1800MHz spectrum.

And all companies will be bidding for the 700hz spectrum - end of the digital switch over period

Simply reality is there isn't an iPhone (or any LTE device for that matter) that's going to work with LTE for you, as ultimately you would probably end up in a 700MHz LTE coverage area regardless of the network.

are you saying in town LTE bandwidth is (would be) 1800 and in rural it is 700MHz?

There isn't a single APAC 700MHz LTE network live anywhere in the world, or any available devices that yet support this band.

It would be safe to assume that much like carriers using 2100Mhz in urban areas as additional capacity for WCDMA networks that once 700MHz spectrum is available and networks are built that the same scenario will occur.

Agreed.

we're better off assuming 1800 and 2600 will be in trial for possible lte scenarios

It's pretty clear that 1800 is going to be one of the primary LTE global frequencies - everywhere except for North America where they don't use that band.

With existing GSM licences in that band it makes a lot of sense, and with single RAN solutions now making combining multiple technologies a lot easier it really is the logical step forward.

The only issue of course of one of $ - everybody wants to pay peanuts for services all while a network has to find hundreds of millions every few years to totally rebuild things.

As other threads say, XT uses 850mhz/2100mhz(infill only. Your phone has to do 850mhz). 2ds does 900mhz 2G and 2100mhz 3g and roaming on vodafone towers.
Vodafone does 900/2100mhz 3g.
