Hey, it's Lambtron Quay, Wellington CBD, two blocks from the Vodafone offices and the busiest commercial street in Wellington. Just from where we were standing there are four Vodafone store in the same block (one being the Vodafone's own flagship store).

Even if that specific mini site was off one would expect coverage.

I know this is OT but I had to mention it after reading that article

Edwards, a shareholder in Econet's New Zealand venture, is understood to have been asked to step aside to make way for a new chief executive with operational experience.

how interesting is that, poor tex. you have to feel for the guy :P

I guess you can't comment on something that still hasn't happened.

think of the coverage foot print from 10 UMTS 2100mhz sites in the CBD

richms: If you care about hick towns in the middle of nowhere which you have to go outside before you get signal, then yeah, telecom are better, but if your talking about normal urban coverage then vodafone blows telecom out of the water. Go where the people are is a smart thing to do, whereas telecom seem to want to install coverage where they arn't. Perhaps that will change if they go wcdma on 850 like telstra.

Yep , i'm not worried about the latte set, just us good old boy hicks.

Care to provide proof that this is the case (rather than generalisations on a single blackspot which is not indicative of the nation wide network)? Myself and others have noted that the coverage to be excellent. The frequency that they use for cdma blows 2100 out of the water which is why vfnz will eventually switch to a 900 mhz network for their 3G/hspda.

Looks like the Herald isn't the only paper that knows of Telstra's decommissioned CDMA network before anyone else:

From the Dominion Post:

Telecom has been left as the sole provider of the CDMA cellular technology in Australia and New Zealand, meaning its customers travelling to Australia are without adequate roaming options.

Sound familiar? :P

They won't decommision the 027 prefix/number range - which is the only thing Joe Bloggs cares about. Your average person doesn't give a sh*t if it's CDMA, GSM, WCDMA, or a cup and string, so long as it works for what they want it for. Anyway, there aren't anymore 02X prefixes left.

020 is Teamtalk / Orcon
021 is Vodafone
022 is reserved/protected
023 is TelstraClear
024 is being partially registered by Woosh, and Telecom
025 is Telecom
026 is Telecom + TeamTalk
027 is Telecom + WxC
028 is Compass / Econet
029 is TelstraClear

I guess they could use 024, but, why? The only reason they moved from 025 to 027 is because they needed to have the two networks up to allow people to migrate properly.

Not really, there is still going to have to be a 'default' prefix if you will for each provider if a customer is buying a new number.

Telecom can't set up a new 021 number or can they?

Yes, but if the CDMA network were wound down, then CDMA-only handsets will become useless and that could cause a consumer backlash. Shifting all CDMA users over to a new UMTS network would require a carefully managed five year migration, much like the TDMA-CDMA transition.
