This has been an interesting thread to read. :-)

I requested an upgrade to VDSL this week, and was sent a HG630b. I wonder why they chose to send me this instead of the HG659b?

I don't really care, as long as it does the trick. I intend to be following the instructions here, so I can run it in bridge mode, and have wifi served by our Asus RT-AC68U... for the devices that need it. All the really important ones are now on Ethernet now. One of the few perks of having an ex-leaky home; Ethernet cabling was installed during the reclad process. :-)

I'd have to say the HG659b I had gave remarkably good WiFi coverage even with two chimneys and tin ceilings. However it kept crashing and losing it's config, and ended up bricked when I tried to upgrade the firmware. I have to say it's only the second device I've ever bricked and made me miss the old days when you could pop the chips out with a ball point pen and throw them in an eeprom programmer and copy someone else's good BIOS over them :-)

I don't really care, as long as it does the trick. They must send the 659 for new fibre connections, as I have just upgraded and got sent one. I got the 630 last year when I switched to Sparks ADSL service, and have still got it as a backup. So maybe they are still sending those for DSL connections. Apparently the 630 also does fibre so I could have used it for fibre anyway, but I don't think it does AC wireless, just N, unless they have updated it.

That is good summary of my experience of HG659b. Not as good as the previous WiFi/router which was 4 years old.

A backward step in WiFi performance from the same location.

I find the range is no worse as the black spark 630 modem, just that the wifi throughput hangs a lot.

I was comparing to a NetGear Wireless-Router Unit, which I gave away. I wish I'd kept it - could have used it for the WiFi side and just used Huawei POS for ethernet/modem.
