It's worth noting there are already significant numbers of people already using the Baseband IP voice solution that Spark are moving to. I'd be surprised if any of these people are even aware of the service they're on as to them it's a normal landline and functions as one.

After discovering the 4th break point and attempts to join the strands along new brighton road post EQ. Our cabinet on the corner of wainoni and new brighton was one of the first to get the combined line cards urgent rush installed along with another fibre draw.

Job done and phonelines all back up promptly following. Just become an issue when wellington got overloaded and crashed subsequently following.

The bit I am not understanding from this discussion is whether Spark will continue to use the existing copper wire from the street into the house or will this need to be replaced with a fibre connection?

I ask as my parents are adamant that they do not want new wires/cables installed on their property in Miramar nor do they want new phones.

Or is this only related with trunk cabling that terminates at the local cabinet

The phone will continue to use the existing copper and will function in exactly the same way it does now with the exact same phone. The changes will be totally transparent to them and absolutely nothing will change in the way you use your phone.

That is, if your phone is a touch-tone phone. If your parents are still using one of those old-school rotary dial phones, they'll need a new one.

The great news is no they won't! There is an adapter that'll do just that so they can keep on using their rotary dial phone.

During the cabinetisation rollout there were actually quite a few cabinets that ended up being fibre only as the state of the copper feeders meant they simply scrapped and all voice was delivered over fibre.

I agree with generational mindset comment and their refusal to change.
Make PC support a nightmare too dealing with old software!

Point out to them that someone will pull the plug on service at some stage. Emphasize the pull the plug part ;)

Spark announced their new Ericsson voice core a few months ago for VoLTE, VoWiFi and the existing FWV offering. I'm assuming this is what will also be used for their new voice core for fixed line also rather than the Broadsoft stack they're using at present.

Yes. VoWiFi doesn't give you the full benefits of a femtocell solution though such as SMS.

Really is absurd that the delivery of SMS is so limited, needing a cellular connection on the sim card that the number is registered to. They need to sort SMS out so it works like every other messaging platform and will send and recieve thru whatever IP connection the phone can find.

I have it on good authority that dialup internet works fine over Spark's UFB voice offering.

Supported may be another question all together, but yeah does work reasonably well.

in many cases better than copper..
