Yes these new plans are a big let down, and step backwards in my opinion (removing rollover data) for myself and others.
But I guess Skinny are targeting the users who don't care about rollover, or speed limits?

In our household we have multiple Skinny users, and like others have mentioned earlier, we change between plans to get more data depending on our needs.
e.g. One month of $66 plan (30gb data), then a few months of $16 (1.25gb data).

Just look at the numbers:

Previous year with Skinny (13 periods in 1 year, 28 day billing)

  • 2 x $66 plan + 11 x $16 plan
  • Year Cost = $308 (avg $23.69 / period)
  • Total Data = 73.75 GB (avg 5.67 GB / period)

Now with the new Skinny plans, if I wanted to try and get close to the same amount of 'full speed' data:

  • 13 x $36 plan
  • Year Cost = $468
  • Total Full Speed Data = 54 GB (4.5 GB / period - LESS than above)

Meaning instead of spending of $308 per year for 73.75 GB full speed rollover data, I'm spending $468 for only 54 GB full speed data (not rollover).

Based on 2degrees prepay, I can do this (12 periods, monthly billing)

  • 3 x $70 plan + 9 x $10 plan
  • Year Cost = $300
  • Total Rollover Data = 77.2 GB

Our household is now looking at moving all SIM's to 2degrees - fingers crossed 2degrees don't introduce this silly 'endless data' and get rid of rollover data too.

One the reasons we prefer 'full speed' data, instead of this slow 'endless data', is we hotspot a lot, e.g phone to laptops, and work remotely, etc.

2degrees does 2 hours of free data a day as well last time I looked. I can see Skinny losing customers with people on higher plans or that plan swap.

I’n on the $16 plan but if Skinny is tightening up wonder if this is the end of Christmas deals as well. Looks like bean counters looking at ways to make more money.

2 hours free data per day has now ended at end of April as it was a summer promotion

I think I'll stay on my $35/30 days 4GB plan including rollover with Skinny Direct. I'm surprised they haven't come up with a more enticing deal since then.

Skinny direct, as a whole, has been grandfathered so you won’t ever be seeing new offers/plans

I would have switched had 2 Degrees had decent coverage where I live. It’s atrocious.

antonknee: I find it interesting neither Spark or Skinny specify the reduced speed for endless data after you use your included max speed data. They mention the practical effect ie degraded video, slower loading but don’t actually put a number on it.

I suppose it’s safe to assume it’s around 1.2Mbps like Vodafone is, but would be nice if this was upfront IMO.

According to their FB post......Once your Max Speed Data allowance has been exceeded, speeds are reduced to 1.2mbps. The actual speed you experience will depend on your location, device, network congestion and other technical factors.

A year back but not even that, on the train to uni the Skinny phone still had internet throughout the whole journey unlike the 2D that had total drop out zones.

That's because if you say 1.25mbit, It's confusing for customers. whereas if you say you can still stream SD video it's more indicative about what your able to do while limited.

Call it marketing, but there is a very real benefit to starting a experience rather than a hard number. People get too stuck on numbers...

Yes I'm aware of that, I was just expecting that Skinny (not Direct) would have better plans by now that can compete with old Direct plans. From my perspective, for now they still don't.

Which makes their BYO Number bonus data and referral bonus data useless.

An interesting choice to kill off the rollover on higher plans.  If 2Degrees don't follow suit it will be interesting to see if they attract any extra customers because of this.  At least the rollover that's left isn't capped at 3.5Gb like Sparks though, I still don't full get why packs that were giving gigs more data a month had the same rollover restriction as the low level pack.

That said with data stack and the bonus data currently on offer I'm now getting more than my entire rollover accumulation each month on the lowest price plan.  It takes a while to build up the data stack but it's really starting to pay off and make me not want to come off this plan, no one will match 4.2Gb a month of full speed use it whenever data for $19 at the moment.
