spazz: Now that I own an iPhone, "ZOMG NEW PHONE RANGE" no longer interests me. It's actually kinda sad :(

It's no longer about the type of handset hardware, it's about the software and services on the device.

But to be honest, as long as all of New Zealand networks are "GSM" and unlocked, do us  "Techies" really need to care about anyones handset range?  Besides subsidy on contact I suppose.

I'm probably going to upgrade my iPhone 3G to the next model (if it has faster hardware).  Long as it's unlocked, ill be using it on the network that allows me to contact the people I want to contact, for cheaper.

NBR are quoting Alan Gourdie (head of retail) as saying that Telecom is in "discussion - deep discussion" with Apple about the iPhone. That sounds positive. I doubt Mr Gourdie would say something like that unless he was confident of securing it, otherwise it would look like a failure if Telecom didn't get it.

Im wondering if the whole "no immediate iphone" thing is due to the fact that telecom wont want to start selling the current model if it is going to be replaced, but cant really announce they will be selling the new one until the new one is announced by Apple?

Mike.

IMO there is no way apple would let a carrier anounce they were stocking the new iphone when the new iphone has not been publically announced by apple (AFAIK)

I wondered that, but that is the exact same situation that Vodafone were in when they announced they were getting the iPhone. They announced it while the 1st gen iPhone was the current model, and before the 3G iPhone had been announced, but it was the 3G iPhone they actually got when it came out a couple of months later. So I don't see that this would stop Telecom announcing anything. All they would have to do is say they are getting the 'iPhone' and not go into specifics.

I guess the difference here is that there is a competitor in Vodafone, and so keeping it vague might be of some benefit.

Exactly, I don't think its a non-disclosure thing ... its a "we didn't get it" thing.

Android os has as many limitations as iPhone os. So it won't be mature enough for me think about it. The most versatile os is still windows mobile. Mauricio is the WM king here in NZ. :-) good on him ! Because only real geeks use WM!

It makes me wonder what Vodafone plans to do to ensure they don't lose more customers!

89c per minute... IT COSTS 1.8X MORE THAN THEIR CURRENT PLAN TO MAKE ON NET CALLS.

Backwards...

[EDIT] Changed from 90c to 89c to follow maths...

Do you remember the old days of DSL? you could get 2MB, sure thats nice but with Data caps of 500/1024mb for something like $100 per month!

Something very similar, especially when NZ was one of the first to get DSL we are one of the last in the race... Same with mobile phones!
