gomez: where are you having your problems exactly? seems like a fault with the phone or site if you have that much coverage and you're still having dropped calls

Basically everywhere I have been that shows me as having 3-5 bars coverage.

As far as narrowing down the fault goes, if it's happening to 8 other people I know then it's hardly going to be a phone issue. Same symptoms, different phones.

If I could get to the service mode of this mobile I'd love to be able to keep an eye on the RSSI and see if it's one particular cellsite causing the dramas locally.

I've had nothing but good experiences with the XT network, I live in Whangaparaoa and get full signal - speedtest.net on XT even slightly beats my adsl connection! The girlfriend lives in Albany and she's ditching VF, she can't even make calls from inside her house while I'm still on 5 bars.

I've recently been travelling Auckland to National park and had no problems either, made a few calls, texting, pxting and browsing with no problems at all. Snow reports in the tworld menu are great! saves buying wifi tokens at the motel =)

Update,

Got a Nokia E75 and I actually have 3g bars. It varies from 0 - 3 however it is more than I was expecting which was nothing at all anyware round the house.

and I can browse through my WLAN if I want to put stuff on it.  Although I have not actually figured out what I might want to change.  Typical Geek, I can do it if I want but I just dont know why I would want to, I just can.

choccers: Update,

Vodafone: No coverage irrespective of what version of G you are using or phone model. Nada nothing zip.
Telecom: CDMA only if I lean the phone at the correct angle and the moon is in a waxing phase and I hover around the back door. Currently on a Samsung W531 however it has a dodgy battery so I am going to have to look at a new one.

If I get an XT sim and stuff it in my phone (if compatible) and take it home and its the same coverage as Vodafone, do you think I will get a refund?

Well, I called Telecom on Wednesday, and spoke to a member of their faults team about the issues I've been encountering, and it seems there are a lot of others experiencing the same issues.

A call has been logged to their Alcatel/Lucent equipment providers as they are also sure this is a network issue rather than a handset problem.

So now I just sit back and wait ...

About once a week or so here in golden bay my data rate drops right off to dialup speeds or nothing. It seems to stay crap for around 24 hrs and then comes right.
Telecom won't admit any issues so I,m not sure if it's atmospheric conditions or what. The rest of the time it's around 1.3mbps

I've been running speedtests and no bad ones from XT, but I do have a weird problem where the upload is always capped around 50-70kbps on my iPhone 3G, but if I drop in a VF SIM it goes up to 200-300kbps

I've been running speed tests in exactly the same location as Exportgoldman (I'm on VF) and I get 117kbps down and 117kbps up....
4 days ago I was getting 1500kbps down... something has changed in newmarket!

bloody XT's so quick Exportgoldman's speedtests on XT's 3G, beats my Iphone 3Gs on our work wireless internet connection, damn it!

XT is very good everywhere except my house where calls drop out and SMS fail however the coverage is very very poor and my device is not the greatest of rf performers. Anywhere else I have been unable to fault XT.

CDMA is marginal but holds a call sufficiently on most devices.

Vodafone GSM 900 is good, UMTS 2100 is ok but doe drop off indooors, UMTS 900 does not exist in the main centres.

My experience over the last month or so is that Vodafone's 900 network works really well for voice and data. I've done a few parallel tests between Vodafone and XT for data speeds and have found very little difference.

But what I have noticed is better call quality on my Telecom R6 than a Voda 6121. Has anyone else found this, or is it a function of the phones?

Not at all happy with XT here in Central Hawke's Bay.  Dropped calls are common.  Poor voice quality is a problem.  Having to stand outside on the balcony when it is pissing down with rain just to get hear the other end reasonably clearly is not a plus in any way whatsoever.

I can watch my coverage drop out and in frequently.  Right at the moment I have zero bars.  Two minutes ago I had three bars.

I received a call yesterday at 11:55am which went straight to voicemail.  I didn't know about it until the voicemail icon popped up after 5:30pm.  What's with that delay?

Coverage is back up to four bars now.

This is happening in the two main towns, Waipukurau and Waipawa.

I have discussed this with other people who have moved to the XT network in CHB and they are experiencing similar problems so it isn't likely to be my phone.    I hear second hand stories about farmers who feeling particularly savage as they get very, very poor service when compared to the CDMA network .

We won't be moving any more phones to the XT network until the service improves or we have no other choice.

From the XT FAQ:

12.What are the advantages of WCDMA 850MHz?

In short: better coverage and in-building penetration.

Yeah, right.

Has anyone else been through the Desert Road with their XT phone and gotten coverage? I went through there a few weeks back and got no coverage, whereas my friend with a Vodafone mobile got coverage. Was using a Nokia 6500 classic.
