@Doctor - maybe Force wasn't the appropriate word, however would vodafone open it up otherwise??

The SIM swap thing is the same recommendation from the last time.

Last time they just suggested removing the battery with the phone still on, removing the SIM card and then starting over again. But that was for after the event, not during.

freitasm: It was a small number when sbiddle got the information... It has snowballed since then it appears.

Sorry but thats just not true. The previous posts  suggested that Auckland and Wellington were affected, this means by deduction that yet another major fault was being enacted.

There are a few on this forum that remain loyal to Telecom despite the fact that:

A. They are not NZ owned anymore.

B. They have sent NZ jobs abroad

C. They are no longer reliable.

I can see why people are loyal but please stop making excuses for undeperformance that is affecting what seems like many people/businesses.

XT's superior pricing is what's making me stay. Unlimited texting and 120MB of data (100MB simply isn't enough, sorry VFNZ) cannot be found elsewhere. 2degrees is a joke for smartphones.

djrm, when I first contacted Telecom they said they didn't know of anything happening. I then posted on my Twitter and a few people said "no problems here" (1, 2). I then talked to sbiddle who found out about those "20 initial sites".

After a few minutes the situation started snowballing with more people reporting problems on Twitter - even those who posted "all ok" came back later saying "yes, I have problems too". Then it went "south of the border Taupo" again.

No one is saying it is a small outage anymore. It's a full outage. I don't see what you got wrong in my post. No one is defending Telecom, just placing the facts in front of everyone.

I guess they would, they are a business after all.
Plus the Vodafone PR would be able to have a field day, "Vodafone, proud to support XT during these difficult times"

Who knows? Telecom knows for sure. I know Johnsonville was completely down when I reported it here at 3:42pm and it was one of the initial problem sites.

Notice that 3:42pm is even before the time TV One reported as the "start of the outage" in their news tonight. So this is going for a bit longer but impacting fewer people. Then something happened that made it go "medieval" on us.

As someone mentioned 2 pages ago the "Alcatel-Lucent New Zealand chief executive Steve Lowe has resigned, the company announced in a statement this afternoon."

fired for XT or not wanting to carry the can?

Neither Vodafone or Telecom would have the capacity to carry each others customers in a case of a network outage. One network falling over would simply tax the other severely - and as a result both companies customers would suffer.

fully down for me now in dunedin, I could at least still send/receive text at 6pm but now nothing

Does Telecom being down and having the mobiles roam to vodafone for 'emergency calls only' put much load onto the vodafone network?
