I am not concerned about the paying for local calls.

Infact I would gladly pay 1 buck a call if there was no montly since that would slash the landline spend to $0-1

julianz: I welcome a higher data cap, and we'll probably change over to the new plans if the fine print looks OK, but it's worth looking across the ditch and noticing that you can get a terabyte of data there for only a very few more bucks a month: http://www.iinet.net.au/broadband/plans.html - yes I know you pay for local calls and so on, but even if you take the next price point down it's still 400 GB.

Really, these are a long way from being genuinely competitive.

Many more Telco's have run national backhaul and installed gear into exchanges.

There is much greater competition.

They also have 3 major submarine cables out of the country where as we have 1.

sounds like a good plan. however telecom are really expensive for the extra GB. xnet only charges $1 and same with orcon

But they have 5 times the population so the usage of each cable should still be far more then nzs one cable.

doozy: I personally think this is a great plan (of course I would), also includes options for changing the data side of the plan ...

40GB $105 (Auckland, Wgtn, Chch) / $115 (Rest of NZ)
60GB $125 (Auckland, Wgtn, Chch) / $135 (Rest of NZ)
80GB $145 (Auckland, Wgtn, Chch) / $155 (Rest of NZ)

it isn't publicly available yet but it will be very soon

Those are decent upgrades for people who are using more data and less landline these days (which is pretty much everyone apart from teh older people heh).

Any chance Telecom will be going a step further and offering something to compete with Vodafone Naked? or is creating a plan without a landline based on naked adsl still a hanging offence at Telecom (even if it required XT mobile account)?

Well this is exciting news.  I just managed to get my BB doubled to 80GB for the next year and I was wondering what was going to happen at the end of it and if Telecom would have bigger data plans by then.

They are piloting the plans by ringing users they have seleted, I imagine the plans will be fully released to the public later.

They seems to be targeting ex-Big Time users who are on Pro and users who use barely use their landlines from what I gather.

drquack32: I was talking with a guy from Gen-i when we were out for a business dinner (client and customer thing) and the conversation we had around naked DSL for Telecom finished at "Why would Telecom create naked DSL for themselves and cut off a $50 revenue stream per house per month"

Now if you were in business, would you do that? To those that say yes, your fail card is in the mail.

Its called VoIP.

I don't think you want to start paying for local calls. its cheaper the way it is now.
When I was in OZ all local calls were charged for on connect, Then it was 20 cents a call but I believe its cheaper now and you still had to pay phone rental ontop of that.
They don't take the rental away just because you pay for local calls, they cut it in half instead.

By the time your kids ring up their mates in the mornings and say good morning - see you soon then hangup and all the other small calls you make its easy for a family to make over 10 calls a day = 300 a month = $60 + line rental.
The highest we had one month was just under 900 calls = $180 + rental :-(

But you are kinda missing the point. I don't use my home line even though the calls cost me nothing. So if I'm not using my home line, what makes you think that I'd use VOIP? I have no use for a land line other than Telecom say I have to have one. Its the same as to me owning 2 cars. You can only every use 1 so why do I need a second? To make things cheaper, I'd down size one and get a scooter. I'd still only use 1 car and have no use for the scooter.
So no its not called VOIP because I'd never use it.

Cellphones have killed all of it.

Ragnor:
Compare the cost of naked adsl vs landline + standard adsl from a few ISP's, it's more like $10 than $50 because.....

Landline + Standard adsl:
You are paying for line rental, broadband services, landline/phone sevices

Naked adsl:
You are paying for line rental and broadband services (no landline/phone service)

I'm not sure about your maths there chief but I pay $130 comprised of $80 for data and $50 for phone right now. Take away the phone portion and the difference is $50.....

I don't know how you arrive at $10.

Ok, why not just go to one of the existing providers such as xnet or the others that provide naked dsl then you won't be paying phone line rental... Simple

As it was said earlier. Why would telecom provide naked dsl when they make millions out of phone line rentals which also suits most people in Nz. The average Joe blo doesn't want to play around with naked dsl, he just wants a phone that works.

Naked DSL requires a special plan as to include the line fees (which the ISP still has to pay telecom for). If you compare the Slingshot plans, you get 25GB of naked DSL for $82, whereas a normal plan with 40GB and a phoneline  is $104. A $22 difference. If you make both plans have 45GB (as it's cheaper than making naked have 40GB), it's $107 for naked, and $114 for normal, which is only $7.

Basically, the phone line is still there, and costing your telco money, so you have to pay for it.

Exactly right, go and compare naked and standard adsl plans for the same amount of data from Snap, Xnet, Orcon, Vodafone and Slingshot if you don't believe me

Standard ADSL:
Line rental
Broadband service
Phone service

Naked ADSL:
Line rental
Broadband service

Also remember with standard ADSL not all ISP's force you to bundle you can have a land line with Telecom and standard ADSL from Xnet or Maxnet for example.

Right now naked adsl + voip is compelling for the features you gain not the cost savings if you don't use home phone (either landline or voip) very much.
