Your Telecom CDMA mobile phone will still give you good service for many years to come and you will still be able to use it in Aus until sometime in 2008/2009.

i should rephrase that, will the mobiles that are still on the CDMA network be useless when telecom decides to pull the plug or will the phones be transferred to the new network.

Telecom aren't pulling the plug.... They are keeping CDMA and following its evolutionary path

Jama: Total 3G CDMA Subscribers: 369.3 million
CDMA 295.4m
WCDMA 73.9m

According to my math that means CDMA has a 80% share of the 3G market. Which leaves WCDMA with 20%. That would make CDMA the 'VHS' of the 3G world.

It could be argued that the majority of existing GSM operators will eventually migrate to WCDMA (or UMTS as it tends to be called these days), which will tip the scales considerably in the coming years.

Eventually being the keyword. People take in account current, not future trends.

People tend to confuse GSM and WCDMA. They are not the same. When talking 3G please do not include GSM or GPRS operators.

We ARE being a bit precious in this forum aren't we -- banning users who dare to express an opposing viewpoint...

bradstewart: I said the Aussie government had put a halt on the closure of the CDMA network a while back... therefore old news. I never said it was still the case.

Your original post did not include the words "a while back".  And you did not say that the halt on closure is NOT still the case either.  By slanting your statement in this way it appeared to someone reading through this thread, that the halt on closure WAS still the case.  An error I have been concerned to point out.  It's called being economical with the facts...

Next time don't shoot the messenger, and don't rubbish the Herald article either just "for being old news".  That article still had some valid points to make...

Like the fact that GSM has 82% of the market.  A fact that Jama is determined to put his own spin on:

Jama: You are again incorrect. GSM is a 2G technology. WCDMA is the 3G technology used by GSM operators. I will say that again WCDMA.  So, to compare apples with apples which you should do. Rather than apples with lemons which is what you have done.

You can call GSM a lemon if you like, but the fact is that GSM is the market leader by a huge margin.  Which gives subscribers a huge choice of handsets compared to the pitiful range available for CDMA.

The underlying technology which implements high-speed data transfer is irrelevant to most subscribers.  They just want it to work in as many countries around the world as possible.  So, 3G GSM handsets also use WCDMA...  Big deal!

If you buy a GSM phone it will work in pretty much every country and you can take the same number with you through global roaming.

If you buy a CDMA phone, it will work in NZ, Oz (until sometime in 2008), the USA and I think Korea...  Not a great choice.

Jama has also said:

Jama: Lucky that Telecom didn't introduce that 2G GSM technology then considering that Voda will eventually move all their 900MHz spectrum to WCDMA.

Not lucky actually...  at least not if you are a Telecom subscriber.  You are stuck with a very second-rate selection of phones until Telecom finally upgrade to something that is widely used around the world.  By that stage it will probably be WiMax but who knows how long that will take.

OK, so Jama has stated that Vodafone will eventually move all their 900MHz spectrum to WCDMA as well.  Cool.  That's nice.

In the meantime we have a great choice of phones which provide excellent data transfer speeds via HSDPA... Not before time, I would have to admit.  The speed of GPRS was well behind Telecom's offering for a long period even though it did have the benefit of working overseas.

Thomas09: so anybody know what will happen to people who have telecom mobile phones?

Eventually they will only be useful as a paper-weight, just like 025 phones are now.  Had you bought a GSM phone on the other hand, it will no doubt have a much longer useful life.

Maybe I need to spend more on my phones, I've never had one that had an economic life longer than the life of its battery :-)

Providing people come here with the intention of being a troll, yes we ban. Take for example your username. It is a clear indication of a trollish behaviour, isn't it?

Vodafone, or Telecom for that matter, don't need trolls to defend them. These are large corporations and they can do their market.

We have people here from both companies and they live well together. Why a troll needs to come here and disturb the balance?
For example, why don't you dare to use your own name, like many others in this forum?

You see, even the Vodafone people don't like trolls! It makes them look bad, with your behaviour.

GSMrulesOK, you are showing how ignorant of the technology you are!

"OK, so Vodafone will eventually migrate to WCDMA as well"... Vodafone is already using WCDMA. 3G on Vodafone is WCDMA (UMTS). There is no way out of this. HSDPA is an evolution of WCDMA and it comes after, not before.

Then you say that before it gets to WCDMA "[in the meantime] we have a great choice of phones which provide excellent data transfer speeds via HSDPA".

Go back to Wikipedia to learn from the shallow. Pathetic. If you want to be a troll, at least learn the technology before writing this kind of non-sense.
