1. A hard fault, causing the smart modem to reboot. Best way to reduce this is to reboot the modem at like 2am.this issue reoccurs at almost the exact time every day so a reboot in the wee hours moves the impact away.

I don't see a setting in the modem config to schedule reboots. Is there one?

there isn't. My recommendation there is a manual one off.

I seem to recall these things sold at the warehouse though... They are white blocky things that have a timer....

BuzzLightyear: @hio are you able to outline in more detail the actual issue identified? I know you’ve been super helpful keeping everyone informed and have communicated there will be an update which is appreciated. Understanding the root cause of the issue would be good.

Sure, there isn't a Root cause for some of these, apart from being a software bug.

There are 3 issues here.
1. A hard fault, causing the smart modem to reboot. Best way to reduce this is to reboot the modem at like 2am.this issue reoccurs at almost the exact time every day so a reboot in the wee hours moves the impact away.
2. An issue where bandsteering a device has a period of no ip. This is illevated by turning bandsteering off, reducing 2.4ghz power is the option I personally use. There is also a paramater change that improves this a ton.
3. After being online for awhile SSDP traffic gets lost between mesh and base unit. Rebooting modem, device and mesh fixes this. Otherwise if you use WiFi on both the same network its also fine.

@hio77 Can you please provide details on your answer to issue 2 - what settings need to change. I’m getting desperate to get some stability to my network - devices are disconnecting regularly.

As detailed in my message two things you can do.

1. Turn bandsteering off
2. Reduce power on 2.4ghz (there is a setting called output power)

Personally I do #2 only. This basically makes #1 happen anyway because of the mesh coverage.

Thanks. What power level did you select? And what about the parameter change you mentioned?

I already have band steering turned off and am still getting device dropouts.

Hi,

I know many of you are tracking this quite closely. i don't want to give a timeline, however i have just been given an inital drop.

This needs to go through inital validation by spark before anything further can happen, but i'd be interested in a few test pilots to shake things loose.

Please DM me (with your modem serial) if your interested.

It has a Iog yes. What are you looking for exactly?

Move to New Zealand's best fibre broadband service (affiliate link). Note that to use Quic Broadband you must be comfortable with configuring your own router.

@hio77 - do you only need people who are using their modem's as routers? I.e. connected to the 'net so then can be pushed updates? Or are you also testing people like me who just use it as a mesh WAP?

I forget if you faced any of the issues in wap mode. Happy to include you as a oddball customer though.

Does the NTP server work in the log when connected to the Spark network?
The smart modem NTP server links are time1.telecom.co.nz and time2.etc.
I am about to join the Spark network with Skinny.
At present I am on Orcon and the smart modem shows the logs starting on 1 Jan at 11.59.... not too useful...

My first ever AM radio network connection was with a 1MHz AM crystal(OA91) radio receiver.

I'm on Spark and can confirm logging shows correct date & time.

Sparks ntp is only avaliable on network.

There is pretty good reason for it. Have a read here.

Trying to internet on an iPad 6th Gen and just wasn't working.

Wifi was connected but no internet detected.

Restarted both the device and router.

Only worked by turning off band steering.

I'm not going to lie I never had so many problems with a router before.

Do you have mesh as well or just the modem?

Sounds like the ipad didn't get disconnected fully so it got stuck in a weird state...

Thanks for the link to the 2003 report on Netgear NTP router code which casues DDoS issues.

Is the Spark Smart Modem NTP code based or have similat risks to the Netgear router?

It appears that the Telecom domain used for the NTP server is at least 6 years old.

Why can't the Smart Modem time be sync'd to a local network computer?
