I can see your point. But I don't think you are paying anything more for it. It is bundled, and is using yahoos service, which anyone can signup for free for a yahoo email account. The only difference is the domain extension being used. It is like Flikr pro which is also a free service that is bundled with the ISP, although that does cost if you aren't with xtra. I haven't even bothered to set an xtra/yahoo email address myself, I just use my ISP for the connection to the internet, and have a domain. But I don't expect a discount from my ISP bill because I choose not to use it.
I think the answer is for ISPs not to provide these free email addresses as they seem to be a lot of trouble for them, and leave the email to companies that specialise in it, such as gmail, hotmail, yahoo etc.

I believe the delays are due to spam filters and servers being blacklisted , which is sort of beyond their control in terms if the time it takes to get the removed from that blacklist. That affects most of these free providers from time to time, and also paid providers too. Blame spammers for the need for these spam filters in the first place.

And this doesn't seem to be happening outside of xtra, it's a bit harsh to bundle all isp's into this 'crappy free stuff' class. As far as I know only xtra are lame enough to farm out this integral part of their service to another company.

I agree with UltimateGeek.

Apart from that, who says I don't pay for my Xtra email? It forms part of a package for which I pay, which has undertaken to provide me with a service, which I am not getting.

Over and above that, I also have a specific business email that I pay separately for, hosted through my domain provider, OpenHost, but for convenience, those email come through to my Xtra email, and those email have been affected too, because of being routed through Xtra.

It actually happens all the time to other ISPs too, as well as hosting providers. It is only because xtra is so big etc, that you hear about it in the media.

If it is hosted by your host, then you should setup email storage, and incoming and outgoing mail through the host, so you can bypass your ISP altogether. You don't need to send your ISP through the xtra servers if you have a web host.

If you look on the Telecom website, it does actually clearly advertise it as a free service, quote "Enjoy access to email, calendar and contacts with free Yahoo! Pro Mail." So it looks like they consider it a free service. But I can see it from your point of view too.

When I used an xtra /yahoo email account, my main problem with it was that legitimate emails kept going into my spam folder, so I missed a lot of emails until I checked that folder. I had the same problem emailing xtra email addresses, where people didn't receive my emails, because they arrived in their spam folder. That why I don't use it, although my ISP is telecom, which I find to be good.

I had this problem too, it became unbearably bad when Xtra hooked up with Yahoo. In the end I turned off the Xtra spam filter and use the outlook one instead.

Re the free Yahoo Pro Mail I think what is being referred to as being free is access to the Yahoo Pro mail webmail function not your Xtra mail. As someone else mentioned try adding more Xtra accounts than whats in your base allocation and see if it's free.

Or try changing your ISP, and keeping your "free" email address with xtra. But I can see where your coming from matt, and yes I've seen telstraclear get blacklisted more than once.

Another thing to note with changing mail service provider is do they have a backup MX record /queue for you? Xtra do this, as do most (all?) ISPs, but I've had other NZ hosts that leave you high and dry bouncing emails back if your server goes down. And not only don't they do it by default, don't do it at all. Leaving you to find another service to do it. (I used dyndns in the past)

I've got a client that uses Xtra as her ISP and also for sending / receiving email. For the last few days she has been having trouble sending email, she gets the following bounce-back messages (email addresses have been obscured to protect the innocent):

This doesn't happen to all the messages she sends, some get through ok (i.e. to me) but she has had similar errors from different ISP's.

i always find it funny when people say that their mission critical process uses email as the delivery system - email system do not guaranty delivery of messages, it can be delayed and or lost anywhere from your system to the receivers system with no feed back to the sender. If it mission critical, use something better then email to deliver it.

Where does it actually say though, that email accounts are part of the service that comes with the internet connection. I can't see any information on that apart from the reference to the free yahoo pro thing. What is the base allocation as I though you could set up many xtra accounts? I think if you are paying extra, you do have a point about paying for an email service. But even then, they probably have in their terms that they don't guarantee delivery based on circumstances. But I do think that businesses need redundancy. If a business is using email for mission critical things, then they need redundancy. They should perhaps invest in their own email server, or have email hosted with multiple providers.

If email is critical for your business then use a provider who is expert in the area of email hosting, not your ISP who are expert in running internet access - not email systems.
