You're getting frustrated that the telcos aren't currently considering something that is frankly a long way off. You might as well ask why they're not considering their position on holographic TV or what kind of 5G network they want to build. Now is not the time to be considering this. Even if it were, they wouldn't make it public.

Can we forget about this now?

Believe me depending on your definition of long it is not a long way off and I bet the top bosses of the telcos are well and truly considering it and it is probably already in their 10 years plans. I would not be suprised if it was common in 5 years.  I was asking why they are are not pushing the change, which has been well and truely covered now. I overlooked the fact that the network would not be able to handle such quantity of data at the moment.

I agree I could of worded the thread better so it didn't sound like I was talking in today's terms. The telcos are probably already thinking about a 5g network too. As far as the original post I think this thread has done its dash.

On a side note I wonder how long before home land lines are a thing of the past. Especially with the younger generation coming through who only use a cellphone. They will connect either by tethering their mobiles or fibre optic and all home phones will probably run on broadband which creates huge benefits when you also have mobiles operating on data.

I have not looked into how the new data sharing offer from 2 degrees works, but it is going to be a pretty cool future.

I dont think that sms or calls will be going anywhere, but MMS deserves to die a quick and painful death.

Qwerty person...
Not everyone uses technology the way you do.
Why???
Some of us go to work and earn the money to pay our bills and make our tech choices. If I choose a new Mazda or HTC One X today I can't afford to buy a newer technology Electric Vehicle, or Samsung S-III tomorrow.

If I wait for 'the-next-big-thing', by the time it arrives there'll be a newer 'next-big-thing' to hang out for......

You can't live in the future (you've got no real idea of what that is going to be like, none of use do), you have to live in the present. If Telcos are offering minutes and txts and data now, thats the space we're all in. They need us to be customers to buy the minutes the txts and the data so they can plan and afford and install the LTE networks that will give you more data than you can currently afford.... and you'll need to buy new hardware to be part of that. Which means you'll need some money to pay for the hardware and the data and the 'next-big-thing'.
You might even need a job.......
....and the next-big-thing in audio, and bedding, and kitchen appliances, and out of season fruit....

If you think the Telcos don't want to stay in business, by offering choices people don't want... then you're simply not really thinking about what's possible, what's probable, or what's real.

....or you're well healed enough to start up your own network that'll offer us all a data only future in a business model that'll get enough of us excited to commit to it because it offers a better sustainable 'going-forward' future proof alternative (on a global basis).

Let me be your first customer.... where do I sign??

Seeing as the OP can't play by the rules, even after a warning, he is having a little holiday for 7 days and this thread is now locked.
