Someone from Spark went on RNZ and said they have 330k active mailboxes, and 260k of those had not been paying for it separately until now.

Wow that is a lot more than the tech media commentators said it could be. This is closer to what I expected the numbers would be based on how many people I still see use xtra.
I discovered that Outlook.com free email accounts do work in older versions of outlook such as Outlook 2010 so that could be an option for some. But they maybe better to use a newer and more secure mail client like Thunderbird.
260,000 @ $5.95 = $1.5M per month or $18.6m pa. Not a bad new income stream for Spark I guess.

I am sure some of those 260k will be like this and won't consider themselves "active".

The free Outlook service is ok except for their spam filter retrospectively moving emails hours after they land in my inbox. It doesn't happen often, but frequently enough to be annoying.

The advantage of using Outlook.com and Outlook email client things like calendar and contacts replicate over multiple devices. It doesn't do that with Gmail.

Does anyone know if an outlook.co.nz address can have an outlook.com alias?

I have been trying out the free Outlook service and it looks pretty good and more user friendly and simple than Gmail in terms of setting up email clients, and it does work in older software such as Outlook 2010 for example. But Outlooks spam filtering is terrible and many emails seem to end up in the junk folder. Gmail is a bit of a mess TBH with the settings, and I think you have to use an app key with outlook, at least I did when I was setting out outlook 2019 with gmail. The main difference though with Outlook and Xtramail is advertising inside webmail, which appear as emails above the real emails and I think Xtramail was ad free.
I am a subscriber ONLY to Spark's xtra email service.
Do I need to give them notice 30 days prior to the price hike on 16 May 24?

It appears you have to go in and delete the accounts manually as shown at hhttps://www.spark.co.nz/xtra-mail-changes/close.html
I don't know if 30 days notice is required? If that is the only service you have and you want to cancel it all, then you should contact them to find out.

I was discussing this with someone, and they thought it would be a good idea for Spark to allow the address forward to another after it is closed for a period of time. Especially as they won't be allowing the addresses to be reused. I think under the circumstances, and if the customer remains a spark customer, that this isn't a bad idea and shows goodwill, as forwarding is not using any mail storage etc. I think Paradise and clear did this back in the day when they cancelled their email service.
Chatted with an agent on WhatsApp.
Created a request to cancel and and have it completed on 15 May 24.
I have already cleared all my mail in the folders and forwarded ones that I need.
Next step is to delete all the contacts and xtra email is ready for termination by 15 May 24.
