How come telecom sells that nokia 85 for 1500?? I ha d a look at phonesdirect website and it cost only like $850. So what's wrong with telecom pricing? Maybe they need to change it soon... Other phones pricing are reasonable though. I have just called a phone dealer and he told me that it's diffcult to get a WM phone for telecom. Xperia x1a maybe, but hard to get. So now I don't have many choices. Vodafone still enjoy the widest compatibility of phones that can work on its network by a very wide margin. And because telecom is a 3G only 850mhz network, that alone minimized the numbers of available handsets.

It is rapidly becoming apparent that the XT Network isn't going to revolutionise pricing like we have all been expecting - it is not much more than Telecom bringing it's network technology up to date. And even then, they are going overboard, 21Mbps "on the go" at today's data rates (even if Telecom magically halve Vodafone's) is OTT, though backhaul will likely reduce the real time speed significantly anyway.

Disappointing really, though it isn't over yet, I may have to eat my words next Friday . . .

(Come on 2degrees you are our only hope, unless Vodafone has put some decent plans together in anticipation of something better from Telecom)

When did Telecom ever indicate that pricing on XT would be lower than the status quo?

steveonz: You think that is crazy? Look at this...

Bring on NZ Comms... sorry 2Degrees!

{MOD EDIT : SP : Credit where credit is due, this slide is from this NBR article}

The only thing 'crazy' about that is that it barely gives any detail.  I'm not sure how you can draw any conclusions about the overall XT pricing from that table. apart from about the few plans with numbers on them that look fairly competitive IMO.

e.g. a postpaid plan that cost $49, gives you 100 minutes to any net any time, then charges 49c/min to any net after those 100 minutes.

IF my quick research is right, compare that to the current telecom equivalent, Anytime Go 100, which costs a whacking $78.75/month, that is a saving of nearly $30 on XT, and minutes are priced about the same.  Pretty good I think.

The closest voda equivalent I can find is Talker 120, which is $60 ($10 more than the XT plan, although you get 20 more minutes) but charges addittional minutes at $0.69 - (50% more thant the XT price!)

I don't have a specific example but I think it is fair to say that the expectation of a good number of people is that the arrival of the XT Network would bring a compelling reason to change.

While the technology will arguably be better, the investment in terms of handset purchase, contract term commitment, etc is looking less and less worth it for what is looking to be a similar service at a similar price but paying your bill to someone else.

Has anyone heard rumors that $10 txt will be a thing of the past or will it be moving to the new network?

Certainly the marketing isn't trying to convey a 'value' message. The story there is all about speed and power with lots of images of very expensive tech like Ferraris, Macbooks and the like. I don't see any message about it being inexpensive.

That being the case, some of the handsets are surprisingly well priced and the plan indicated on that slide of $49 / 100 anytime, any-net mins / 49c per min overage looks better than Telecom's current 100 anytime plan. I do wonder what they have up their sleeves for people currently on off-peak plans like the one that is $30 per mth for 200 offpeak minutes -- the pricing indicated here does not appear to be in their favour.

The handsets are manufactured by ZTE. Here is the Australian ZTE site: ZTE

The Telecom R6 is the same as the Telstra T6
