cafeg:
richms: I am not concerned about the paying for local calls.

Infact I would gladly pay 1 buck a call if there was no montly since that would slash the landline spend to $0-1

I don't think you want to start paying for local calls. its cheaper the way it is now.
When I was in OZ all local calls were charged for on connect, Then it was 20 cents a call but I believe its cheaper now and you still had to pay phone rental ontop of that.
They don't take the rental away just because you pay for local calls, they cut it in half instead.

By the time your kids ring up their mates in the mornings and say good morning - see you soon then hangup and all the other small calls you make its easy for a family to make over 10 calls a day = 300 a month = $60 + line rental.
The highest we had one month was just under 900 calls = $180 + rental :-(

Its not cheaper the way it is now where I am forced to buy flat rate local calling inorder to get any internet from telecom.

As everyone I know has a mobile phone, and its cheaper by far to call a mobile on a mobile, then I dont have much use for a landline or voip line other than calling 0800 numbers for companies that are cheap or places where I will be on hold for ages and dont offer an 0800 number. Neither of those are worth $50 a month and voip deals with them just fine anyway.

For the home business stuff, voip is so much better because it has services on it that would push a telecom line up to close to $80 included on it.

Why are your kids calling when they could just SMS their friends?

Pretty sure the people who live on their mobile phones are hardly going to bother sending a fax.

fax on voip was good enough once I changed the ATA for one that did t38.

really, who needs a fax thesedays, just choose who you do business with to not include people stuck in the 25 years ago timeframe who have email and you are fine. That means 55 year old accountants and lawyers and insurance brokers who are sole traders/partnerships are out of the question, but like dinosaurs, they will go extinct soon with their poor customer service and processess.

Well they are a business not a charity and they have a vested interest in maximising ROI from their landline infrastructure.

Have you considered a switch to naked adsl with a different ISP?  Move to an area connected to the exchange with LLU gear? Switch to wireless (NZ wireless, Compass etc)?  There are non Telecom options, just not as attractive as Telecom ADSL.

UFB is only what 10 years away now, hopefully we don't screw it up.

I am on a non telecom provider. As I am due for a cabinet soon, that means I am not able to get internet on LLU gear, wireless is not available here.

Got a call today and was offered plans that were 40/60/80gb capped or overage, no contract.

Went for a 40gb plan capped :)

He sounded a bit suprised when he looked at the previous usage, and saw I was doing an average 70gb on a 20gb plan Tongue out

In the OP the quoted text mentioned a rate for overage, but does anybody know whether there will be any option for throttle-on-cap instead?

EDIT: OOps, answered in the previous post. This is awesome news, the 40GB plan is the same price as the 10GB plan and I don't make any landline calls so that's a great deal. For people that DO use landline calling, you can set up subscriptions in Skype for set amounts of minutes to NZ landlines each month. They start at just 1 Euro (around $2) for 60 minutes of calling.

I got the call about moving to this.

I am in Chch and the price quted to me was $115. Why is this?

doozy: I personally think this is a great plan (of course I would), also includes options for changing the data side of the plan ...

40GB $105 (Auckland, Wgtn, Chch) / $115 (Rest of NZ)
60GB $125 (Auckland, Wgtn, Chch) / $135 (Rest of NZ)
80GB $145 (Auckland, Wgtn, Chch) / $155 (Rest of NZ)

it isn't publicly available yet but it will be very soon

I got a call from Telecom yesterday morning, about them rolling out the 80GB Total Home package and they were calling a 'select few' heavy users of their Pro plan customers to get them to switch over.

Personally, I don't think it's a bad plan. Coupled with no tie-in, may as well give it a shot. Saves me a ton of cash, as I was doing around 80GB per month anyway!

When I spoke with a little birdie the other week, he explained the plans were due to go live over this weekend. Not sure if he meant totally live, or whether they'd start calling peeps like me to gauge interest... So, keep an eye on their site this weekend I guess.

Cheers,
Taz

That 80GB plan for $145, does that include a phoneline? or is there $45 on top of that for the phone?

That includes the phone line.  All Total Home plans do.

Well I'm already on the Total Home package with Pro net, I would be very happy to stay with Telecom if they charge me $145 for 80GB and phoneline!!

I second that - I've just rang up Telecom about a completely unrelated matter and the word is that these plans aren't going to hit until February next year. If Telecom upped their caps by 10-20GB each year then at least theoretically it should be possible for Telecom to be able to keep up with the expected increase in usage and I would stay with them for the long term.

IMHO 80GB is pretty good and if by the end of 2011 Telecom upped the amount to 100GB for their top plan it would keep pretty much 99% of their customers happy.

PS. I'd love to have a higher connection to the exchange (I'm connected at Downstream Rate: 3325 Kbps Upstream Rate: 731 Kbps) but its the data caps that are of higher priority for me since I can always leave downloads/uploads going over night.

I just got a offered the 40gb for an extra 5 dollars. I never expected myself to get a call.. they seemed surprised I was reaching up to 30 gigs beyond my 20gb cap & wanted to shift me to 40.. when I inquired if there were any more plans he said "No no no, this is the only plan!' .. feeling a bit damned i didn't get offered anywhere close to 80 i took it anyway.. he too also mentioned these plans won't be rolling out till February.. now I'm just waiting till November 7th for my uncontracted plan update =o=
