Talkiet:
zpempire: Beware, I just switched from Vodafone to Telecom 500GB plan. The speed to download on Torrent is just average 5KBps despite my download speed is 9MB when doing speedtest.

The download speed is average at 1MBps for the last two years with Vodafone.

I contacted Telecom support team and I was told that I am on the same server as before. but I was not given any advice because Telecom does not provide any support for "torrent".

I asked Telecom do you guys actually sharp torrent traffic, the answer is NO. However, the speed for doing other things such as watching on Youtube, iTunes is very good.

So thinking carefully before switching to Telecom if you do download a lot on P2P.......

HI zpempire. There is no shaping on the 500GB plan. I am on a 160GB plan and all types of traffic (including torrenting) go at the expected speeds for me. Please don't 'warn' people based on your single experience which is not going to be anything to do with traffic shaping.

I see you have posted this in another thread too and there are a couple of hints there already - I'm sure this is an easily resolved problem.

Cheers - N

No offense, I like Telecom, otherwise I would not switch to Telecom. In fact I have been with Telecom mobile XT network for over two years, the speed is much faster than Vodafone 3G. But in terms of landline broadband, I am really not impressed.

1. the speedtest result was about 11MBps when I was with Vodafone, now it is only 9MBps. I have full record of history to support of that.
2. The interest fact that I also found out that I connected my PC with Telecom XT mobile broadband using iPhone personal hotspot, the download speed for the same torrent file is suddenly increased to in average 250kbps. None is changed on my PC except chosen a different network. But once switch back to landline broadband, the speed is just 3/5/7 Kbps most of the time.

After all, what I said is my personal opinion and it is completely based on my experience. Nothing more.

The apparent drop from 11 to 9mbps could be due to a number of things. You probably don't have a record of the ADSL stats from when you were connected to VF. They could have a less conservative bunch of settings that can result in slightly faster DSL sync speeds than Telecom. It could also be you're not using the best speedtest server...

The best one to use to test actual ADSL performance is:

http://speedtest.telecom.co.nz/

That will give you the best possible measure of how good your ADSL connection is.

For the torrent speed issue, see other thread and try what I suggest there.

Thanks Talkeit, the issue is now fixed magically as per discussed on the other thread. As long as I can download some stuff occasionally at a normal speed range, I would not brother the difference of 9MBps or 11MBps on speedtest.  Considering the big plan 500GB offered by Telecom, I would not need to worry about capping if we watch too much on Hulu Plus or Netflix. :)

As long as the speed is in a normal range, Telecom new broadband plan is very appealing. 119 for 500GB is good value for money.

Cheers - thanks for confirming it's working ok now... The 500G plan does look amazing... Telecom staff haven't been able to sign up to it yet (we get delayed a few weeks to let proper customers get provisioned quicker) but we can sign up from Nov 1, you bet I will be :-)

Cheers - N

Your vodafone speed could have been higher as you may have been on their red network, where they drop the SNR to increase your syncrate. Line stability can suffer but you tend to get a slight speed boost.

Many thanx.  Our new 200Gig plan switched over today.  Now we can do  "cloud" backups without  going over our limit and paying mega dollars for over use..

Just switched to the 500GB, and unfortunately it didn't go smoothly. We were connected to the broadband, but the modem didn't arrive. After going back and forth between Telecom and Courier Post, it was discovered that somehow Telecom sent the modem to the address we were living... 5 years ago. And they had no idea how this happened since our phone bills were sent to our current address.

To be honest, while this was not ideal, I was okay as long as it was resolved - which it was, as we would receive the modem on Wednesday.

However, the customer experience with the CSR was disappointing. The CSR was not very helpful, would not elaborate when she said we would still have broadband (after I prompted by telling her we had an old modem and asked about our broadband connection because I was concerned our old ISP account would be deactivated), and had an impatient tone when I wanted to ask further questions. In the end, I simply let it go because she obviously did not want to talk further and I could always look at the website, but it was very offputting.

We have had a phone line with Telecom 10 years but this will be the first time we'll have broadband with them. I understand mistakes can happen, but the customer experience was a letdown.

We were previously with Slingshot, and while they have their issues, their CSRs were at least friendly and tried to help (some training issues/limitations aside). Unfortunately, the same could not be said for the Telecom CSR this morning.

I also can't help but compare it with when we first joined Slingshot 5 years ago - everything went smoothly, modem was delivered, broadband connected, and when we had issues with disconnections, the CSR helped troubleshoot our network settings (at the time, our XP and Vista PCs were not getting along).

So, in short, not a smooth transition to Telecom broadband and I was disappointed by the customer experience.
Hopefully, there won't be any further issues. Currently with the old modem our speed is slightly better than what we had with Slingshot, and much better around peak hours. It will be interesting to see if there are any further improvements when the new modem arrives.
