l43a2:check that your account actually works by going to www.xtramail.co.nz then try login on your client

nunz:1 - Log into xtra.co.nz web mail with your user name  (email) and password.  It might make you go through a Captcha process - do it else you iwll never recevie emails via pop.

2 - If that works use the settings in three below otherwise:
Check your username nad password.
Phone xtra to change your username nad password as it is likely to be wrong.

3 - Settings:
POP: pop3.xtra.co.nz
Port 995
SSL turned on.
User: full email address
Password: Only you and god and xtra know that. If others know it change it.

SMTP:
Server: send.xtra.co.nz
Port 465
SSL Turned on. Accept any cert option if you have it might help.

User authentication and password required to log in.

If SSL and 465 dont work try TLS and 587 - but dont use this unless really desperate.

Thanks to you both. My partner and I have just moved back after 30 years in Sydney and are still setting up/moving into our house and are just a tad over it all.

So after making sure all my Apple mail settings were correct and then not working, I sort of through my hands in the air. Absolutely ridiculous to have to sign into Yahoo mail to get Telecom xtra mail to work - real stupid. But it is working now. But will still use our 3 gmail addresses for quite awhile till Telecom completely get their act together.

Cheers

Whilst the difficult we can do immediately, the impossible takes a bit longer. However, miracles you will have to wait for.

That's the thing. NEVER user an ISP-provided email, Xtra or otherwise. Much easier to just use something independent so you can freely move between ISPs.

In Aus I belonged to the same ISP since 1994 (TIG/ihug/iinet) and used their email servers solely. In fact I had 5 email addresses with them plus a home web site with them. Never used any other email provider and I NEVER had any problems. I activated our gmail accounts solely to use during our move and settling in from Aus to NZ.

nunz:
l43a2: its spoofing, the email isnt actually coming from those accounts directly afaik

It would be an interesting spoof as it was from my clients email address, to my business address. most spoofs arent from one person who knows someone to another. Its to someone random.

My opinion - hacked again!!!!

It's not uncommon, they are spoofing to/from real email addresses they've harvested in the past from Yahoo (like in the xss exploit).

It's an avoidable problem though because xtra.co.nz still does not have a SPF record which would allow anti spam systems to discard email from servers not authorised to send for xtra.co.nz domains with ease.

LennonNZ: See if you can log what its doing/what is erroring.

see: http://email.about.com/od/outlookexpresstroubles/qt/Log-Pop-And-Imap-Traffic-To-Troubleshoot-Windows-Live-Mail-Windows-Mail-Oe.htm

This will be great if you can get logged what is happening.

The popup login box is occurring right now. This is the type of log I am getting when it occurs. it is very intermittent, and seems to occur at peak times at certain times of the day.
